Portugal has more consistent surf than anywhere else in continental Europe. The combination of Atlantic exposure, varied bottom types (beach break, reef, point break), and a surf culture that stretches back to the 1960s means there are legitimate options for every level — from first-timers on gentle beach breaks to professionals chasing record-breaking waves at Nazaré. For individual break guides, see our dedicated surf pages for Ericeira, Peniche, Nazaré, and Sagres. The Costa Vicentina wild coast between Sagres and Sines adds another layer of consistent Atlantic swells worth exploring for intermediate and advanced surfers.

Where to Learn to Surf in Portugal

Peniche — Best for Beginners

Peniche is a 1.5-hour drive north of Lisbon on a narrow peninsula. Baleal beach on the north side of the peninsula has a soft, forgiving beach break that’s ideal for learning. Multiple surf schools operate here, and the town has a well-developed surf tourist infrastructure with board storage, surf showers, and accommodation targeted at beginners.

Surf schools at Peniche/Baleal:

Baleal Surf Camp — one of the oldest operations in Peniche, running lessons and week-long camps since 1996.

  • Lessons: approximately €35–45 per 2-hour group lesson as of 2026
  • Camps: approximately €450–650/week including accommodation and 2 lessons/day
  • Level: All levels; beginner-focused

Deep Blue Surf Camp — similar setup, slightly more boutique. Popular with European solo travellers.

  • Lessons: approximately €35–40 per group lesson as of 2026
  • Camps: approximately €480–700/week
  • Level: Beginner to intermediate

Ride the Tide — local school focused on small-group (max 6 per instructor) teaching.

  • Lessons: approximately €45 per lesson as of 2026

Ericeira — World Surfing Reserve

40km north of Lisbon, Ericeira holds one of only two World Surfing Reserve designations globally. The reserve encompasses seven distinct breaks across 4km of coastline — from the mellower Foz do Lizandro beach break (good for beginners) to the expert-only Coxos reef break.

Ericeira is better for intermediate surfers upgrading their skills than absolute beginners — the more consistent wave quality is wasted on those just learning to pop up. That said, Foz do Lizandro runs beginner lessons reliably.

Surf schools in Ericeira:

Ericeira Surf School — long-established school with lessons at multiple spots depending on conditions and ability.

  • Lessons: approximately €40–50 per 2-hour group lesson as of 2026
  • Camps: approximately €500–750/week
  • Level: All levels

Feelingsurf — instructor ratio of 1:4 maximum, good for those wanting more coaching attention.

  • Lessons: approximately €45 per session as of 2026
  • Private lessons: approximately €90 per hour

Semente Surf School — run by Portuguese surfers with strong local knowledge of which breaks are working on a given day.

  • Lessons: approximately €40 per session as of 2026

Nazaré — Spectator Destination, Not for Lessons

Nazaré is where Sebastian Steudtner broke the world record for the biggest wave ever surfed (26.21m in 2020). Praia do Norte, where the big waves occur, is strictly for experienced big-wave surfers only — the underwater canyon creates waves that are unsuitable for lessons at any level of “normal” surfing.

The town beach (Praia da Nazaré) to the south is calmer and does have some surf schools, but Nazaré’s value as a surf destination is primarily as a spectator experience. The big wave season runs October–March; the clifftop at Sítio above Praia do Norte is where crowds gather to watch.

If you’re visiting Nazaré to watch, check the surf forecast on Magicseaweed or Surfline before arrival — big wave days are rare and weather-dependent.

Surf Camp Formats

Learn-to-Surf Camps (Beginner)

Week-long packages including accommodation, 2 lessons per day, and equipment. Typically run April–October. Groups are usually 8–20 people, majority European (British, French, German, Dutch).

  • Duration: 5–7 nights
  • Price range: approximately €400–750/week as of 2026 depending on accommodation standard
  • What’s included: Board + wetsuit hire, 2 guided lessons/day, accommodation, sometimes breakfast
  • Locations: Peniche/Baleal, Ericeira, Sagres (smaller camps)

Surf and Yoga Retreats

Combined surf lesson + yoga sessions, usually at smaller boutique properties outside the main surf towns. Popular with solo travellers aged 25–40.

  • Price: approximately €700–1,200/week as of 2026 (accommodation, food, surf + yoga included)
  • Locations: Near Ericeira (Mafra area), Sagres, and increasingly the Alentejo coast

Intermediate Improvement Camps

For surfers who can already ride waves but want to progress to turning and bigger surf. Usually involve video analysis sessions and beach coaching alongside water time.

  • Price: approximately €550–850/week as of 2026
  • Best locations: Ericeira (better wave variety than Peniche for progression)

Equipment and Conditions

Wetsuit guide:

  • July–September: 3/2mm shorty or even board shorts (water 20–22°C)
  • April–June / October: 3/2mm full suit
  • November–March: 4/3mm or 5/3mm (water 14–17°C)

All schools provide wetsuits. If you’re staying for a week, consider renting a wetsuit separately from a surf shop for better fit than school-provided gear.

Board types for beginners: 8–9ft foam longboards (called “malhas” locally). Don’t be embarrassed — pros use them for cross-training.

Practical Details

Getting to the surf towns:

  • Peniche: 1.5 hours from Lisbon by coach (Rede Expressos, approximately €9 each way) or 1 hour by car
  • Ericeira: 45 minutes from Lisbon by car; no direct coach — take bus from Campo Grande to Mafra then local service, approximately 1.5 hours and €6–8

When to book camps: Summer camps sell out by April–May. Book by March for July–August. Off-season camps (October–April) have more availability.

Budget for a surf week at Peniche: Accommodation in surf hostel (€25–40/night) + daily 2-hour lesson (€35–45) + food (€20–30/day) = approximately €400–600 for 5 days, not including travel to Portugal. Frequently Asked Questions

Can complete beginners take surf lessons in Portugal?
Yes — Portugal has some of Europe's best beginner surf beaches. Baleal at Peniche and Praia de São Julião near Ericeira both have gentle beach breaks and multiple certified surf schools. Most beginners stand up on a board within a 2-hour lesson.
What's the best time of year for surf lessons in Portugal?
May–September for beginners — smaller, cleaner waves, warmer water (18–22°C). October–March is peak surf season with bigger swells, better for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Do I need my own equipment for a surf lesson?
No — all surf schools provide boards (foam longboards for beginners) and wetsuits. Some schools also provide rashguards and booties in cooler months.
