Accommodation
Hotels in Portugal: Where to Stay in Every City
Portugal has a varied accommodation landscape across all price points. Lisbon and Porto have excellent boutique hotels in heritage buildings — azulejo-tiled townhouses, Art Nouveau palaces, and converted convents. The Algarve coast concentrates the resort-style properties: five-star beach hotels at Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo, and smaller independent hotels in Lagos and Tavira. In the Alentejo and Douro Valley, wine estates offer rural stays with vineyard access.
Portugal is notably good value compared to France, Italy, and the UK for comparable quality. A mid-range boutique hotel in Lisbon's Alfama neighbourhood costs roughly half what an equivalent London hotel charges. We have written detailed where-to-stay guides for all cities covered on this site.

Types of Accommodation in Portugal
Pousadas
A uniquely Portuguese institution — heritage buildings (castles, convents, palaces, manor houses) converted into atmospheric hotels run by Pestana. Pousada de Óbidos, Pousada Convento Arraiolos, and Pousada de Monsanto offer stays inside working medieval architecture. Prices are mid-to-high but the settings are exceptional.
Boutique Heritage Hotels
Lisbon and Porto have dozens of boutique hotels in converted 19th-century townhouses and azulejo-tiled buildings. Bairro Alto Hotel, Memmo Alfama, and Torel Palace in Lisbon; Casa do Conto and Selença in Porto. Typically 15–40 rooms with high design standards and city-centre locations.
Algarve Beach Resorts
The Algarve coast concentrates Portugal's resort-style accommodation — particularly around Vilamoura, Vale do Lobo, Quinta do Lago, and Albufeira. Full-facility five-star resorts (Conrad Algarve, Anantara Vilamoura, Pine Cliffs) sit alongside smaller boutique hotels in Lagos and Tavira.
Quintas (Rural Estates)
In the Alentejo and Douro Valley, working wine estates and rural quintas offer accommodation with vineyard access, wine tastings, and farm-to-table dining. Six Senses Douro Valley is the highest-end example. Many quintas are independently run with 5–15 rooms. Excellent value compared to Tuscany equivalents.
