About The Portugal Guides

Portugal stretches far beyond Lisbon and Porto. From the surf breaks of Nazare and Ericeira to the volcanic lakes of the Azores and the levada trails of Madeira, the country rewards those who look past the obvious stops. That range is exactly what we set out to cover.

Mainland, islands, and everything between

The Portugal Guides treats continental Portugal and the Atlantic islands as a single destination. We write about the Algarve's quieter western coast with the same depth as Sao Miguel's hot springs or Madeira's mountain roads. Where most guides stop at Lisbon recommendations, we keep going — into the Alentejo, the Douro Valley, and the lesser-documented cities of the interior.

How we approach travel writing

We write from direct experience. That means specific bus numbers, actual meal costs in euros, and honest assessments of whether a place justifies the trip. Portugal has become one of Europe's most popular destinations, and with that comes a lot of recycled advice. We aim to be more useful than that.

Surf spots get conditions and season info, not just adjectives. Accommodation advice includes realistic budget ranges. And when something is overhyped or overcrowded, we say so.

Transparency about recommendations
