Surf Portugal

Surfing in Portugal

Portugal has more consistent waves than any other country in continental Europe. From Nazaré's world-record big waves to Ericeira's World Surfing Reserve and Peniche's WSL Championship stop — guides to every surf destination on the Portuguese coast.

Portugal's Main Surf Spots

Surfing at Nazaré, Portugal
Big wave Expert only

Nazaré

Home of the world's biggest rideable waves — Praia do Norte holds multiple world records (Garrett McNamara, Sebastian Steudtner). The underwater canyon channels Atlantic swells into 20–30m monsters from October to February. Spectators gather on the clifftop at Sítio to watch from above. Not a spot for swimming.

Surfing at Peniche, Portugal
Beach & reef break Intermediate–Expert

Peniche

A WSL Championship Tour stop (Rip Curl Pro). Supertubos is one of Europe's most powerful beach breaks — a heavy, barrelling left-hander that works best in autumn. Peniche has dozens of other spots including Baleal and Lagide for intermediate surfers. Strong surf camp scene.

Surfing at Ericeira, Portugal
World Surfing Reserve All levels

Ericeira

The second World Surfing Reserve designated (after Malibu). Ericeira has seven consistent break types within 4km of coastline — including Ribeira d'Ilhas (classic right-hander), Pedra Branca, and Coxos. Easy train access from Lisbon. Strong local surf culture and sustainable tourism focus.

Surfing at Sagres & Costa Vicentina, Portugal
Beach & point break Intermediate–Advanced

Sagres & Costa Vicentina

Southwest Portugal's wild Atlantic coast. Beliche, Tonel, and Mareta beaches all work on different wind directions. The Alentejo coast to the north (Arrifana, Monte Clérigo) has consistent Atlantic swells with fewer crowds. Best October–April when the Algarve towns are quiet.

Surfing at Guincho, Portugal
Beach break Intermediate–Advanced

Guincho

Wild, windy beach 8km west of Cascais. Strong onshore winds make it better for windsurfing and kitesurfing than surfing, but the waves are consistent. Easy day trip from Lisbon. Gets crowded on summer weekends.

When to Surf in Portugal

October–March (Peak Surf Season)

Consistent Atlantic swells, water 14–17°C, uncrowded lineups. Nazaré big wave season runs November–February. Peniche and Ericeira are at their best. 3–4mm wetsuit required. The Rip Curl Pro at Peniche takes place in October or November.

April–June (Shoulder Season)

Smaller, cleaner swells. Water warms to 16–19°C. Ericeira and Peniche remain consistent. Good for intermediate surfers and beginner lessons on the sheltered beach breaks at Baleal (Peniche) and Praia de São Julião (Ericeira area).

July–September (Summer)

Smaller waves, warmer water (20–22°C), crowded. North swells can still produce good surf at Peniche and Ericeira. Sagres and the Costa Vicentina get consistent wind swell when the Algarve is flat. Best for beginners and longboarders.

Surf Camps

Peniche has the densest concentration of surf camps (Baleal Surf Camp, Deep Blue Surf Camp). Ericeira has several longer-stay camps aimed at intermediate surfers. Sagres has smaller, more remote camp options. Prices: €400–900/week including accommodation and coaching.
