The most popular Algarve activity. Dozens of small operators run hourly boat tours from Lagos marina and directly from the beach below Ponta da Piedade.

Standard Motorboat Tours

Small wooden or RIB (rigid inflatable) boats carry 8–15 passengers through the main sea arches, into accessible caves, and around the stack formations.

Kayak Tours

Kayak tours depart from Lagos beach (Praia dos Estudantes) and paddle south to Ponta da Piedade. The advantage over motorboats: smaller sea caves that boats can’t enter, the ability to stop inside caves, and a physical experience of the coastline.

Stand-Up Paddleboard Tours

Several operators in Lagos run SUP tours along the same route — slower than kayaking, better views of the cliff tops, and more meditative. Better suited to calm summer days (July–September) than the choppier autumn and spring conditions.

Dolphin Watching Tours

Common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and occasionally striped dolphins are resident in the waters off the western Algarve year-round. The Atlantic coast off Sagres and Lagos offers the most consistent sightings.

Responsible Dolphin Watching — What to Look For

Portugal has regulations limiting how close boats can approach dolphins, but enforcement is inconsistent. When choosing an operator, ask whether they’re members of WiSe (Wildlife Safe) or AIMM (Portuguese Association for Marine Mammals Research). These operators follow approach protocols that protect the animals and generally have better guides who can identify species.

Ria Formosa Boat Tours (Eastern Algarve)

The Ria Formosa lagoon system east of Faro is a different experience entirely — calm, shallow waters, barrier islands, flamingos, and bird colonies. Boat tours depart from Faro and Tavira.

When to go: May–September is peak season — warm, calmer seas, long days. October–April can see rougher conditions; some operators run year-round, some close entirely November–March. Check individual operators before booking off-season.

Sea conditions: The western Algarve (Lagos, Sagres) is more exposed to Atlantic swell than the south coast (Albufeira, Tavira). Boat tours from Lagos are more likely to be cancelled in poor weather — have a backup day.
