Nearly every embassy sits in Lisbon, so if you are in Porto, the Algarve, Madeira or the Azores, expect to deal with them by phone, email or online form first. Confirm details on the official site, because hours and appointment rules change.

Emergencies: who to call first
For anything urgent, call 112. That reaches police, ambulance and fire. Embassies are not emergency responders, so contact them after the immediate danger has passed. For theft, report it at a police station, and see our Portugal safety guide for common scams and risk areas.
What an embassy can and cannot do
They can issue emergency travel documents, provide a list of English-speaking lawyers and doctors, contact family, and offer support after a serious crime or accident. They cannot pay bills, arrange loans, cancel fines, get you out of custody or act as your lawyer. Your travel insurance is the right route for medical bills and trip costs.
If you lose your passport
- Report it to the police and get a written report. Insurers and consular staff both ask for it.
- Contact your embassy by phone, email or its online form, as the UK and US ask for steps like this to be started online.
- Prepare documents: ID of any kind, photocopies or photos of your lost passport, proof of your onward travel, and passport photos. Requirements vary by country, so ask what yours needs.
- Apply for an emergency travel document, which is usually valid for a single journey home. Embassies generally work weekdays only, so a weekend loss may wait until Monday.
- Do not travel on the old passport if you find it later, as it will have been reported as lost.
Keep a digital copy of your passport photo page in your email, and check our Portugal visa requirements so your documents are in order. If you are staying in the capital, a Lisbon tour is an easy way to spend a rest day while paperwork is processed. See also our Lisbon city guide.
