Algarve Golf: Best Courses, Prices and When to Play

The Algarve is one of Europe’s top golf destinations for straightforward reasons: reliable sun from late autumn through spring, a concentration of high-quality courses within a small area, competitive pricing compared to the UK or Ireland, and short-haul flights from most European cities. The region hosts more than 30 courses between Faro and the Spanish border, ranging from budget municipals to two of the top-ten most expensive courses in Europe.

Understanding the difference between them - and knowing when to go - is the key to getting value.

The Best Courses

Quinta do Lago South

Difficulty: Hard | Par: 72 | Length: 6,488m (Championship)

Quinta do Lago South is the most celebrated course in Portugal. Redesigned by Beau Winn and reopened in 2014, the South Course occupies the most dramatic land in the resort - wrapping around the Ria Formosa natural park, with water in play on multiple holes and the lagoon visible from the back nine.

Hole 15 is frequently cited as one of the best holes in Europe: a 192m par-3 played over water to a peninsula green. The 17th - a reachable par-5 with water on three sides of the approach - produces the most dramatic moments in the region’s tournament play.

Minimum handicap: 24 (men), 28 (women). Mandatory caddie carts at some tee times. Book 2–4 weeks ahead in peak season.

Quinta do Lago North

Difficulty: Medium-Hard | Par: 72 | Length: 5,960m

The North Course is Quinta do Lago’s more accessible layout - still high-quality, but less demanding than the South. Lakes and Ria Formosa views are present throughout; the 13th and 14th holes along the lagoon edge are the standout sequence.

Vale do Lobo Royal

Difficulty: Hard | Par: 72 | Length: 6,000m

Vale do Lobo’s two courses (Royal and Ocean) are among the most photographed in Portugal. The Royal is the more famous - specifically hole 16, where the tee shot must carry 200m+ over a series of Atlantic sea cliffs. The ball disappears over the edge before landing on a green 30m below with the ocean beyond. It’s a genuinely vertiginous experience, even when playing conservatively.

The Royal Course was redesigned by Rocky Roquemore in 2006 and demands accuracy rather than length. Several fairways are tree-lined and tight; the sea-cliff holes are spectacular but unforgiving.

Vale do Lobo Ocean

Difficulty: Medium-Hard | Par: 71 | Length: 5,847m

A slightly shorter, less dramatic course than the Royal, but with ocean views from several elevated positions and a more open character. Good as a warmup round before the Royal, or if you want to play both Vale do Lobo courses in a single trip.

Green fees (approximate): €160–200 peak, €95–120 low season.

Vilamoura Old Course (Vilamoura Victoria)

Difficulty: Medium | Par: 73 | Length: 6,254m (Championship tees)

Vilamoura’s Old Course - officially renamed Vilamoura Victoria after a redesign - is the most played course in the Algarve and one of the busiest in Europe. It hosted the Portugal Open for many years and still hosts professional events. The layout is wide and welcoming for higher-handicappers while offering enough challenge from the back tees for low-handicappers.

Vilamoura has four other courses nearby: Pinhal, Laguna, Millennium, and Dom Pedro. This concentration makes Vilamoura the best base for golfers who want variety - you can play five different 18-hole rounds without driving more than 5km.

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club

Difficulty: Hard | Par: 72 | Length: 6,566m

Located in Vila Nova de Cacela near Castro Marim, Monte Rei is the easternmost major course in the Algarve and the most isolated. Designed by Jack Nicklaus (one of only two courses he designed in Portugal), it opened in 2007 and is regularly placed in lists of the top 10 European courses.

The course occupies rolling land with long-range views to the sea and the Serra do Caldeirão mountains. Water features on several holes; the fairways are wide but the rough is demanding and the greens are fast. The club has its own hotel and offers limited public tee times - it functions partly as a private members’ club.

Monte Rei is worth the journey if the budget allows - the quality of conditioning and the scenery are a level above most Algarve courses. Distance from Faro airport: approximately 55km, 45 minutes by car.

Quinta do Lago Laranjal

Difficulty: Medium | Par: 72 | Length: 6,065m

The newest Quinta do Lago course (redesigned and reopened 2016) takes a different approach to its neighbours - fewer water features, more cork oak and orange groves in play, and a more natural landscape character. Green fees are lower than the South and North courses, making it a good entry point into the Quinta do Lago area for golfers who want the address without the premium.

Mid-Range and Budget Options

Pinheiros Altos

Between Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura. A course through umbrella pines with some water holes; quieter than the major resort courses and priced accordingly.

São Lourenço

Considered by many the most scenic course in the Algarve - built alongside the Ria Formosa lagoon, with flamingos visible from the course in season. A private course but accessible through specific partner hotels. Check availability if staying in the Quinta do Lago/Vale do Lobo area.

Municipal courses (Silves, Benamor)

For golfers prioritising value, several municipal and smaller resort courses in the central and eastern Algarve offer playable 18-hole rounds for €30–50 in all seasons. Benamor Golf near Tavira offers particularly good value with a quality layout at a fraction of the major resort prices.

When to Play

October is the sweet spot: summer heat has broken, the course conditions are excellent (fairways have recovered from summer traffic), green fees are 20–30% below summer rates, and the days are still long enough for afternoon tee times.

April is second - green fees have not yet risen to summer rates, weather is warming (18–24°C), and the Algarve countryside has spring wildflowers.

Booking and Logistics

Online booking: Most courses allow direct booking via their own websites. Golf in Portugal (golfinportugal.pt) aggregates availability across most Algarve courses if you want to compare slots and prices.

Golf packages: Most major hotels in Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago, and Vale do Lobo offer golf packages that bundle accommodation with course credits. These often work out 15–25% cheaper than booking separately, especially in low season.

Equipment hire: Available at all major courses - approximately €25–35 for a full set. Quality varies; if you’re particular about clubs, bring your own or hire from a specialist shop in Vilamoura or Almancil.

Dress code: Smart casual on the course - collared shirts, tailored shorts or trousers. No denim, football shirts, or cargo shorts. Soft spike shoes required; metal spikes are banned at most courses.

Vilamoura is the best base for variety - walking distance to the marina, restaurants, and five courses. Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo suit golfers who want exclusivity, excellent accommodation, and proximity to the top courses without a resort atmosphere.
