Christmas in Portugal 2026: What's Open, Where to Stay and Eat

Christmas in Portugal is a family holiday first and a tourist event second. The streets are lit from late November, the cities stay mild, and the best-value flights of the winter sit just before 20 December. But for a few days around 24 and 25 December, most of the country shuts. This guide covers what is open, where the festive atmosphere is real, which hotels and restaurants work in Christmas week, and what the weather will do. For the wider month see Portugal in December, and for the party that follows, our New Year’s Eve in Portugal guide.

What Is Open on 24, 25 and 26 December

The calendar matters more than anything else in this guide, so plan around it.

  • 24 December (Christmas Eve): a working day. Shops and supermarkets open in the morning and close by mid-afternoon, around 15:00 to 17:00. Restaurants that normally serve dinner often close, because the evening is consoada, the family meal.
  • 25 December: a public holiday. Almost all shops, museums, castles and palaces are closed, including Sintra’s palaces and Lisbon’s Jerónimos Monastery. Public transport runs a reduced Sunday-style timetable or stops entirely on some regional lines, so check Comboios de Portugal before you plan a train day.
  • 26 December: not a national holiday, and most things reopen, though some attractions open late. Our public holidays guide lists the exact closures.

What stays open on the 25th: hotels and their restaurants, airports, Uber and Bolt (with surge pricing), taxis, pharmacies on rota, and many Chinese and Indian restaurants and city-centre cafés in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve resorts. We always book a hotel breakfast and a hotel dinner for the 25th rather than hoping to find a table.

Where the Festive Atmosphere Actually Is

Lisbon. The lights run along Rua Augusta, Avenida da Liberdade and Chiado, and a very large tree stands in Praça do Comércio beside the Tagus. The Christmas market in Parque Eduardo VII runs through December. We recommend walking Rua Augusta to Praça do Comércio at dusk, around 17:30, when the lights come on. See our Lisbon guide for neighbourhoods and our Lisbon in winter guide for rain-day plans.

Óbidos. The Christmas Village inside the medieval walls is the most themed market in the country, with an ice rink, craft stalls and ginjinha served in chocolate cups. It is crowded on weekends. Details are on our Óbidos Christmas Market page and in the Óbidos city guide.

Porto. Lights on Rua de Santa Catarina and Avenida dos Aliados, and a calmer feel along the Ribeira. Porto is colder and wetter than the south, so we pack a waterproof.

Funchal, Madeira. The whole bay is decorated, and the island is the warmest Christmas option in the country. Lights go up in late November, and the city builds toward the New Year fireworks. Our Madeira island guide covers the layout.

The Algarve. Quiet and mild. Most resort bars shut for a few days, but old towns such as Lagos and Tavira run small Christmas markets and light displays, and the golf courses stay open.

Christmas Dinner: What to Eat and Where

The traditional consoada centres on bacalhau com todos (salted cod with potatoes, cabbage, chickpeas and egg), followed by polvo (octopus) in some regions, and desserts such as rabanadas (a French-toast style pudding), filhós and the bolo-rei. Bolo-rei appears in bakeries from November, and Confeitaria Nacional in Lisbon’s Baixa has made it since 1829.

For a restaurant Christmas lunch or dinner, the most reliable options are hotel restaurants that publish a set festive menu. In our experience the best-known are the dining rooms at Belmond Reid’s Palace in Funchal, The Yeatman in Vila Nova de Gaia (a Michelin-starred restaurant with views back across the Douro), and Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon. Menus for Christmas Day typically cost approximately €80-€200 per person as of 2026, depending on the property. These are our estimates from previous seasons, so always confirm the 2026 menu and price with the hotel and book before mid-November. Independent restaurants that open on 25 December usually publish a fixed menu and ask for a deposit.

If your hotel is in Lisbon and you are short of options on the 25th, we suggest booking a table for lunch rather than dinner; more places open at midday.

Flights and Price Windows

December has two price phases. From 1 to 19 December flights are near the annual low, and fares from the UK to Lisbon, Porto and Faro are often approximately €30-€80 each way, as of 2026. From 20 December to 2 January, fares typically double or more, and Madeira rises fastest. The cheapest Christmas travel days are usually 24 and 25 December themselves, when fewer people fly. Compare options on our flights to Portugal guide and search flights to Portugal.

Christmas Weather by Region

Our Christmas Plan Suggestions

Four days, city focus: Lisbon, with a Tuesday trip to Óbidos before the weekend crowds, and the 25th at a hotel dinner. Seven days, warmth focus: fly to Funchal, base in the hotel zone, and book the Christmas Day lunch before you travel. Four days, relaxed: Tavira or Lagos on the Algarve, with a walk along the cliffs on the 25th. Browse Lisbon tours or Algarve tours for the 26th, when attractions reopen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Portugal open on Christmas Day?
Mostly not. 25 December is a public holiday, so most shops, museums and many restaurants close. Hotels, hotel restaurants, airports, taxis and some city-centre cafés stay open, and 24 December is a normal trading day with early closing.
Where is the best Christmas atmosphere in Portugal?
Lisbon (Praça do Comércio tree and Avenida da Liberdade lights), Óbidos (Christmas Village inside the walls), Porto (Aliados and Ribeira) and Funchal in Madeira, which is decorated across the whole bay.
What is consoada?
Consoada is the family dinner on the evening of 24 December, traditionally salted cod (bacalhau) with boiled potatoes, cabbage and eggs, followed by bolo-rei, the king cake. Many restaurants shut that evening because staff are at home.
How much do hotels cost at Christmas in Portugal?
Prices are approximately 20-40% above early December in Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve, and 50-100% above in Funchal for the days around 26-31 December, as of 2026. Book Madeira by September.
Is it warm enough for the beach at Christmas?
On the Algarve, daytime highs reach approximately 16-17°C and the sea is about 16-17°C, so sunbathing out of the wind is common but swimming is brisk. Madeira reaches approximately 19-20°C by day.
