Spain’s Costa del Sol and Portugal’s Algarve are the two main mainland winter sun rivals in Europe, and both sit at the southern edge of the Iberian Peninsula with more than 3,000 hours of sun a year. The Costa del Sol wins for warmth, flight choice and winter beach life; the Algarve wins for value, walking and quieter towns. Neither is a swimming destination in winter. Below we compare them on temperatures, prices, bases, activities and practicalities. Figures are approximate and as of 2026, and for the Spanish side we rely on averages for Málaga; always check the national weather services (IPMA for Portugal and AEMET for Spain) before you book.
Winter Weather Compared
| Algarve (Faro) | Costa del Sol (Málaga) | |
|---|---|---|
| November, day / sea | 19°C / 18°C | 20°C / 19°C |
| December, day / sea | 16-17°C / 17°C | 17-18°C / 17°C |
| January, day / sea | 16°C / 16°C | 17°C / 16°C |
| February, day / sea | 17°C / 15-16°C | 17-18°C / 15-16°C |
| Night lows, Dec-Feb | 7-9°C | 8-9°C |
| Rainy days, Dec | approximately 7-9 | approximately 5-6 |
The difference is small, usually 1 to 2°C. The Costa del Sol is helped by the mountains behind the coast, which shelter it from northerly winds, and it records a few more clear days. The Algarve’s west coast around Sagres is windier and cooler than its south coast near Tavira. Neither is warm enough for relaxed sea swimming for most people, although the first half of November is the exception on both coasts.
Prices: Where Winter Money Goes Further
The Algarve is generally cheaper on the ground. A restaurant meal in Lagos or Tavira is typically approximately €12-€20 per person, as of 2026, while the busier Costa del Sol resorts (Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos) run higher in the beach-bar zones. Hotel rooms on the Algarve in winter start at approximately €45-€80 in Faro or Lagos and approximately €100-€180 for mid-range, in line with our Lagos, Faro and Albufeira hotel guides. For Spain, rates vary widely by town and by week; we prefer to check live prices on the booking engine rather than quote a range we cannot support.
Flights are where Spain pulls ahead. Málaga is one of Europe’s largest winter sun airports with many daily departures from the UK and Northern Europe, and fares are often competitive from approximately €25-€80 each way as of 2026. Faro has a smaller winter schedule. Check our flights to Portugal guide and search flights to Portugal.
Bases and Atmosphere
Algarve: Lagos for cliffs, bars and a walkable old town; Tavira for quiet and tradition (see the Tavira guide); Faro for the airport and the Ria Formosa; Albufeira for the most year-round services among the large resorts. Many Albufeira bars shut for winter. Our Algarve region guide maps the options and the Lagos guide covers the western base.
Costa del Sol: Málaga for a full city with museums and tapas, Nerja for a smaller, quieter coast, Marbella and Estepona for polished resort life, and Fuengirola and Torremolinos for budget packages. The coast has high-rise resort strips in places, whereas the Algarve keeps its old towns more intact.
What to Do in Winter
Algarve: coastal walking on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail between Marinha and Carvoeiro, birdwatching in the Ria Formosa (flamingos in winter), golf, almond blossom in late January and February, and boat trips from Lagos to the sea caves. Costa del Sol: city culture in Málaga, day trips to Granada and Ronda, tapas, winter beach clubs and large golf resorts. For Algarve activities see Algarve tours and our Algarve golf guide.
Practical Matters
- Language and currency: both use the euro. English is widely spoken on both coasts.
- Driving: the A22 motorway on the Algarve has electronic tolls, approximately €5-€8 for a long run, as of 2026. Spain has a larger toll-free network. See Algarve car rental.
- Heating: older guesthouses in both countries can be cold at night in January, so look for heating in the listing.
- Safety and healthcare: both are EU countries with standard travel health arrangements; sort travel insurance before travel.
Our Verdict
We would choose the Costa del Sol for the most reliable warmth, the widest range of flights and a bigger winter scene of restaurants and beach bars. We would choose the Algarve for lower prices, scenic walking, golf at modest prices, and the quieter, more traditional feel of Tavira and Lagos. If you want the warmest Portuguese option, skip both and read our guide to Madeira vs the Canary Islands, or look at the month-by-month data in the Portugal winter sun guide and the ranking in the warmest place in Portugal in December. Who Should Choose What
Choose the Algarve if we want a quiet old town, daily walks on a clifftop path, a lower daily budget and a trip of a week or more with a hire car. It also suits golfers on a budget, retirees staying for a month or longer, and anyone who wants Portuguese food at modest prices.
Choose the Costa del Sol if we need the most reliable warmth, a direct flight from a regional airport, a big city with museums and a lively evening scene, or a family trip with a wide choice of hotels and resorts. It is also the better choice for a short break of three or four nights, because the airport is close to the coast and transfers are quick.
Consider a split trip if we have ten days or more: a few nights in Tavira followed by a few in Seville or Málaga gives two countries for the cost of one extra train or coach, and it lets us choose the better forecast for each leg.
