Santa Maria’s accommodation is compact and focused around two locations: Vila do Porto (the main town, all practical facilities) and the area above Praia Formosa (best beach access). The island has no luxury hotels in the five-star sense - the top of the market is a good three-star resort at around €140/night in peak season.

Vila Baleira Resort ★★★★
The best hotel on Santa Maria in terms of facilities, set on the hillside above Praia Formosa with a short walking path to the beach. A mid-size resort with a pool, sun terrace, and restaurant. Booking Advice
Santa Maria’s total hotel room count is low - the island fills faster than visitors often expect. Outside Maré de Agosto festival week (early-to-mid August), peak dates are July weekends and the weeks around Portuguese national holidays. Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and September; 3–4 months ahead for August festival dates.
Most properties include breakfast. Evening restaurants in Vila do Porto are limited - the town has three to four options, and the best ones fill on summer evenings. Confirm restaurant hours with your guesthouse on arrival.
