Where to Stay in Flores — Accommodation on Europe's Westernmost Island

· 3 min read Island Guide
Small stone guesthouse overlooking a caldera lake on Flores island, Azores

Flores has no large hotels. Accommodation on the island consists of small guesthouses, rural tourism houses (casas de turismo rural), and a handful of self-catering apartments. The total accommodation capacity of the island is under 300 beds. For comparison, a single mid-range São Miguel hotel has more rooms than the entire Flores inventory.

This is not a disadvantage — it means you are staying in small, family-run properties where the owner knows the island and can advise specifically on where the waterfalls are flowing and which roads are passable. It does mean booking in advance and communicating your plans clearly.

Santa Cruz das Flores

Hotel Serrano — the largest accommodation on the island, a 3-star hotel in Santa Cruz with 29 rooms. Functional rather than atmospheric; the main advantage is reliability — consistent service, straightforward booking through international platforms. Restaurant open for dinner most evenings. Rates €75–110/night.

Aldeia das Flores — a small guesthouse complex near the Santa Cruz town centre with self-contained apartments. The best option for independent travellers who want kitchen access and flexibility. 8 units, each with a separate entrance. Rates €80–120/night. The owner is an experienced local guide and can arrange car hire and waterfall walks.

Residencial Bela Vista — the most affordable option in town. 10 rooms, basic but clean, family-run. Breakfast included. The name is apt when cloud clears — the view from the upper rooms towards the Atlantic is worth having. Rates €50–75/night.

Rural Options

Casa do Corvo — a converted stone farmhouse 5km from Santa Cruz, on a hillside with views towards the caldera lakes and the Atlantic. Self-catering with a large kitchen, outdoor terrace, and a garden that gets genuinely warm in summer. Sleeps 4–6. Rates €100–160/night for the whole house.

Quinta do Jardim — near Lajes das Flores on the south coast. A small farm guesthouse with 4 rooms, vegetable garden, and a resident donkey. The owners prepare dinner using their own produce on request. Rates €65–95/night including dinner. This is the kind of property that people visit intending to stay 2 nights and extend to 5.

Casas de Fajã Grande — a small cluster of renovated stone houses in Fajã Grande village itself, managed by a local cooperative. The most remote accommodation on the island — you are genuinely at the western end of Europe. Basic facilities, no restaurant in the village; bring supplies from Santa Cruz. Rates €70–100/night.

What to Know Before Booking

  • Phone ahead: even for properties with online booking, a direct phone call (or email in Portuguese) is appreciated and may secure a better room.
  • Dinner: outside Santa Cruz, your guesthouse may be your only dinner option. Confirm dinner availability when booking. Most guesthouses that offer it charge €15–20/person for a set meal.
  • Flight cancellations: Flores is grounded regularly by Atlantic weather. Build an extra night’s flexibility into your stay if you have an onward connection from Faial or São Miguel. Many guesthouses charge no cancellation fee for weather-related delays — ask explicitly.
  • Payment: most properties take cash. Some accept bank transfer but card payment is not universal. Arrive with sufficient euros.
  • Car hire: the island’s car hire fleet is 10–15 vehicles total. If you book accommodation without also booking a car, you may find nothing available on arrival. Arrange transport simultaneously with your room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many accommodation options on Flores?
No. Flores has perhaps 15–20 guesthouses and rural properties in total. The island receives very few visitors and infrastructure is correspondingly limited. Book in advance — not because properties fill up, but because owners on a small island appreciate knowing you are coming.
Is there a hotel with a pool on Flores?
No hotels on Flores have swimming pools. The natural pools at Fajã Grande and the coastal rock pools serve as the swimming options.
What food is available at Flores guesthouses?
Most guesthouses offer breakfast; some offer dinner on request (usually the evening's only practical option outside Santa Cruz town). Local food is simple — açorda, grilled fish, alcatra-style stewed meat — and good. Communicate dietary requirements when booking.
