Where to Stay in Óbidos — Best Hotels

Óbidos is a small town and its accommodation market reflects that — a handful of options inside the walls, more guesthouses and self-catering apartments in the immediate surroundings, and cheaper alternatives in nearby Caldas da Rainha. The standout option is the castle pousada, which is genuinely unusual. Everything else is pleasant but unremarkable.

Pousada de Óbidos — Castelo de Óbidos

The pousada occupies the castle itself — the medieval keep and tower, within the castle walls at the western end of the town. It has 17 rooms, some of which are in the original medieval tower with small windows and thick stone walls. It is one of a small number of pousadas that genuinely deliver on the promise of staying in a historic monument; the building is real, not a pastiche.

Rooms vary: the castle tower rooms are atmospheric but small; the rooms in the restored wing are more comfortable and larger. Rates run €180–280 depending on season and room type. Breakfast is included. Booking well in advance is essential — it’s a popular property with limited capacity.

The restaurant attached to the pousada serves regional Portuguese food at mid-to-upper price points and is open to non-guests for dinner. The location — inside the castle walls, above the town — makes an early morning walk around the pousada terrace one of the better experiences in Óbidos before the day visitors arrive.

Guesthouses Inside the Walls

A small number of guesthouses operate inside the walls, mainly in converted townhouses along or near Rua Direita. These are typically 4–8 rooms, simply furnished, with the appeal of being in the medieval town after dark. Casa d’Óbidos and Rainha Santa Isabel Hotel are two longer-running options in this category, with rates around €80–130. They are not luxury properties, but the location compensates for the modest standard.

Outside the Walls

The area immediately outside the main gate has more space for larger properties. Hotel Real d’Óbidos is a rural hotel on the outskirts with gardens, a pool, and easy car parking — it’s the most practical option if you’re travelling by car. Rates run €75–110. The 10-minute walk to the gate is slightly downhill.

Self-catering apartments in the outskirts can be found from €65–90 per night and are a sensible option for families or those staying multiple nights.

Caldas da Rainha (9km North)

If budget is the priority and you have a car, Caldas da Rainha has conventional hotels from €45–70 that make a practical base for Óbidos day visits. The town lacks charm but has full services — supermarkets, petrol stations, a hospital — and a market worth visiting on its own terms.

When to Book

The Christmas market period (December) and August festival months require advance booking. Outside those windows, Óbidos’s small accommodation stock can fill up on summer weekends, particularly for the pousada. For the pousada, booking 4–6 weeks ahead for non-festival periods is sensible; 2–3 months for peak season.
