Terceira’s accommodation is centred on Angra do Heroísmo, the UNESCO-listed city on the south coast. Staying in the historic centre is the most convenient option - the city is compact and walkable, with the best restaurants and the Sé Cathedral within minutes. A smaller number of rural guesthouses and quintas on the island’s interior offer alternatives for those prioritising quiet over convenience.
Angra do Heroísmo: Historic Centre
Pousada de Angra do Heroísmo - the island’s most prestigious address, installed in the 18th-century Convento de São Francisco (adjacent to the city museum). The pousada format means a state-heritage conversion with contemporary facilities inside a historic shell. 24 rooms, courtyard, bar, and restaurant. Rates €130–220/night depending on season. Book directly through Pousadas de Portugal for the best room allocation.
Quinta do Martelo - a converted rural estate 5km from the city centre on the southern slopes. 15 rooms in traditional stone buildings, including units with private terraces and garden access. The quinta runs a restaurant serving traditional Azorean food (cozido das Furnas is available on order) and has a heated swimming pool. Rates €90–150/night. Good for anyone with a car who wants space and quiet without being far from Angra.
Hotel Terceira Mar - large 4-star hotel on the edge of Angra, directly above the sea. The main hotel in the city by room count; swimming pool (heated in shoulder season), spa, and a restaurant with sea views. Slightly outside the walkable historic centre but the best option for families wanting pool access and consistent service. Rates €100–170/night.
Casa de Hóspedes Maracaju - one of the better small guesthouses in the historic centre. 10 rooms in a traditional Azorean townhouse, clean and simply furnished, with a common breakfast room. No pool. Well placed for the cathedral and the city’s main streets. Rates €65–90/night. Run by a local family; check-in by arrangement if arriving late.
Praia da Vitória Area
Hotel Caracol - the main hotel in Praia da Vitória (east coast). Serviceable 3-star, well placed for the beach and the marina. Useful if you’re taking the fast ferry to São Miguel or arriving on evening flights when Angra feels too far. Rates €70–110/night.
Rural Options
Monte da Guia Guest House - on the slopes above Angra, with views over the bay and Monte Brasil. Self-catering apartments and rooms, all with terraces. A quieter option than city-centre guesthouses, 10 minutes’ walk from Angra’s main streets. Rates €75–120/night including self-catering kitchens.
Tours in Terceira cover Algar do Carvão cave tours, full-day island circuits, and guided walks in Angra do Heroísmo - useful for planning activities during your stay.

Booking Notes
- Tourada season (July–September): Angra accommodation books up around major tourada days. If your dates coincide with a scheduled event, add 2–3 extra weeks’ lead time to your booking.
- TAP Air Portugal has direct flights from Lisbon to Lajes Airport (TER); Ryanair seasonal services operate from Lisbon and occasionally Porto. The island is rarely overwhelmed - Terceira receives a fraction of the tourists that São Miguel does.
- Car: all Angra hotels have limited parking or nearby street parking (free outside the immediate centre). Confirm parking when booking if you’re travelling with a hire car.
- Weather: the Azores are year-round green for a reason. Pack a waterproof regardless of month; Terceira is slightly drier than the western islands but rain is always possible.
