Where to Stay in Madeira — Best Hotels in Funchal & Beyond

Madeira’s accommodation market is dominated by mid-to-upscale properties. The island attracts a combination of older European package tourists (who fill the large Funchal resort hotels) and a growing independent market (who seek out the better boutique options). Budget accommodation exists but is thin — a hostel culture has not taken hold here.

Funchal: Luxury and Boutique

Belmond Reid’s Palace — the most famous hotel in Madeira, open since 1891 on a clifftop 2km west of the city centre. Churchill stayed here; the pool terrace facing the Atlantic is the standard image of Madeiran luxury. Rates typically run €300–600/night for a sea-view room. Book directly for best rates; Belmond’s own packages often include breakfast. Afternoon tea on the terrace is available to non-guests (€45pp).

Savoy Palace — modern 5-star in central Funchal, opened 2019. Two outdoor pools, multiple restaurants, rooftop bar with city views. More contemporary than Reid’s, more convenient for the Mercado and Zona Velha. Rates €200–400/night depending on season.

Quinta da Casa Branca — a converted manor estate east of the city centre, surrounded by sub-tropical gardens. 44 rooms and suites in the original manor and a modern wing. The gardens (free to wander for guests) include century-old trees and a greenhouse. Rates €200–350/night. This is the best mid-luxury option for those who want quiet and greenery without the resort atmosphere.

The Vine — boutique hotel on the roof of Funchal’s main shopping centre (Dolce Vita mall), which sounds unpromising but works well: rooftop pool, good design, central location, and most rooms have sea or mountain views. Rates €150–280/night.

West Coast

Estalagem Ponta do Sol — small hotel on the cliffs at Ponta do Sol, one of Madeira’s sunniest spots (the south-facing bay collects more sun hours than Funchal). Directly on the PR1 levada walk route. 12 rooms, sea views, good restaurant. Rates €120–200/night. Book well ahead; it sells out in spring and autumn.

Calheta Beach Hotel — 4-star in Calheta, with direct access to one of the two sand beaches on the island (Calheta beach is artificial, with imported sand). Pool, good service. Rates €130–230/night. Useful base for the west coast and the 25 Fontes levada.

Budget Options

Residencial Colombo — central Funchal, clean rooms, basic breakfast, €50–80/night for a double. Family-run, straightforward. Not stylish but functional.

Hostels are rare on Madeira — there are two or three in Funchal but nothing like the hostel infrastructure found in Lisbon or Porto. If budget is the priority, Airbnb and self-catering apartments (particularly in Funchal’s old town) offer better value than hotels at the lower end.

Booking Notes

  • New Year’s Eve: Funchal bay-view rooms with balconies sell out 6 months ahead. Properties without direct views drop sharply in price. If you’re coming for the fireworks, book immediately on deciding.
  • Flower Festival (May): the festival weekend sees 80%+ occupancy in Funchal. The rest of May is manageable with 6–8 weeks’ notice.
  • December–March: quiet season. Rates drop 20–40% below peak, weather is warmer than most of northern Europe (18–20°C), and the levadas are at their greenest.
  • Car: all Funchal hotels have parking or nearby garages. Ask specifically — some charge €10–15/night for parking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Madeira expensive for accommodation?
By Azores or rural Portugal standards, yes. Madeira's hotel market skews toward 4- and 5-star properties. Budget guesthouses exist in Funchal, but genuine budget options are limited. Expect to pay €80–120 minimum for a clean double.
When should I book Madeira hotels?
Book at least 3 months ahead for May (Flower Festival) and October–January. The New Year period requires 6 months minimum for Funchal properties with sea views.
Is it worth staying outside Funchal?
Yes, if you're focused on hiking or the west coast. Ponta do Sol and Calheta have good hotels and are better placed for the PR6 and north coast drives without the Funchal traffic.
