Almost all Faial accommodation is in or near Horta - the islandβs capital and port town. Given that the main sights (Capelinhos, Caldeira, hydrangea roads) are all reachable by hire car in under 45 minutes from Horta, and the ferry to Pico departs from the town marina, there is no practical reason to stay elsewhere.
Horta: Best Options
Hotel do Canal - the standout hotel in Horta, directly on the marina waterfront with views over Horta Bay and across to Pico Mountain. 107 rooms and suites, rooftop bar (best sunset view in the city), and a swimming pool. The building is modern but well-integrated into the waterfront. Rates β¬120β200/night. Book a room with a Pico-facing sea view - the upgrade is worth it on clear days.
Faial Marina Hotel - mid-range 4-star within walking distance of Peter CafΓ© Sport and the boat painting walls. Smaller than Hotel do Canal, more intimate in feel. Pool, comfortable rooms, good breakfast. Rates β¬90β140/night. A solid choice for couples or independent travellers who donβt need the full resort experience.
Pousada da Horta - part of the Pousadas de Portugal network, installed in the former Fortaleza de Santa Cruz - a 16th-century hilltop fortress above the harbour. 28 rooms, a terrace overlooking the sea, and the historic character that pousada conversions do well. Slightly removed from the waterfront bustle. Rates β¬110β180/night.
Residencial GenuΓno - the most straightforward budget option in town. Clean rooms, basic facilities, good location near the Mercado and the ferry terminal. No pool or restaurant, but the surrounding streets have enough cafΓ© and restaurant options to make this unnecessary. Rates β¬55β80/night for a double.
Rural and Boutique Options
Quinta do Alcaide - a rural estate on the southeastern slopes of the island, 10 minutes from Horta by car. Converted farmhouse with self-catering apartments and rooms, garden with views towards Horta Bay. Suited to couples or families with a car who want space, green surroundings, and self-catering flexibility. Rates β¬80β130/night.
Monte da Guia Hotel - situated on the volcanic headland (Monte da Guia) south of Horta, with sea views on three sides. More exposed than town options, but views of Pico Mountain from the pool terrace are exceptional on clear mornings. Rates β¬100β160/night. Popular with divers - the marine reserve around Monte da Guia is among the better dive sites in the central Azores.
Tours in Faial cover guided whale watching, caldeira hikes, and scuba diving packages - useful for planning activities from a Horta base.
