Where to Stay in Aveiro — Best Hotels

Aveiro is a compact city with accommodation options clustered around the historic centre and the canal. It lacks a luxury hotel sector — there’s no five-star property in the city — but the mid-range and boutique options are consistently good value compared to Porto. The city works well for one to two nights.

Canalside and Historic Centre

Hotel Moliceiro (Rua Barbosa de Magalhães) is the most distinctive hotel in Aveiro — it overlooks the Canal Central and is named for the traditional boats. Rooms have canal or garden views, the interiors have character without being fusty, and the location is as central as it gets. Rates €95–140 in season. One of the better value boutique hotels in central Portugal at this price point.

Hotel Aveiro Palace (Rua Viana do Castelo) is a larger property a short walk from the canal, reliable and well-maintained with 90 rooms. It’s less characterful than the Moliceiro but offers more consistent service for business travellers and groups. Rates €70–110.

Veneza Hotel (Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho) is on the main avenue, slightly further from the canal but still walkable. Good-sized rooms, air conditioning, and consistently good reviews for cleanliness. Rates €60–90.

Budget and Guesthouses

The streets around the train station and behind the canal have several small guesthouses and budget hotels.

Residencial Palmeira is a long-running guesthouse with simple rooms at €45–65. Central location, family-run, straightforward.

Hostel Rossio near Rossio square is the city’s main backpacker option, with dorms from €20 and private rooms from €45. Well-rated for cleanliness and common areas.

Self-catering apartments near the canal are available from €65–100 per night and are worth considering for stays of two or more nights, particularly if you want kitchen access to bring produce back from the market.

Costa Nova (Beachside, 8km West)

If your priority is beach access rather than the canal town, Costa Nova has a small number of rental properties on the beach strip. These are mainly self-catering and require advance booking in summer. Getting to Aveiro’s old town from Costa Nova is straightforward by bus (Linha 12, €2) or car. Prices tend to be higher per night than city accommodation given the beach location.

When to Book

Aveiro does not have significant tourist peaks beyond the standard summer months. June through August sees higher occupancy, but availability is rarely a problem with two to three weeks’ notice. The city’s university (one of Portugal’s largest) means accommodation can tighten during graduation periods in July and September — worth checking if your dates overlap.

Aveiro rewards the overnight visitor more than most similarly-sized Portuguese cities — the canal is best in the early morning before tour groups arrive, and the city has a genuine life after the day-trippers from Porto have left.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aveiro a good overnight stop or just a day trip from Porto?
Both work. As a day trip from Porto, 45–55 minutes by train, you have enough time for the canal boats, ovos moles, and a meal. An overnight stay lets you see the city without the day-trip time pressure and gives access to Costa Nova and the salt pans more comfortably.
Where should you stay in Aveiro?
The area around the Canal Central and the historic centre is the best base — close to the boats, the main restaurants, and the Art Nouveau buildings. It is a compact city and everywhere in the old town is walkable.
Are hotels in Aveiro expensive?
No. Aveiro is significantly cheaper than Porto for comparable accommodation. A comfortable 3-star hotel in the centre costs €55–85 in shoulder season. Even 4-star properties rarely exceed €130.
Is there a pousada in Aveiro?
No pousada operates in Aveiro. The city has boutique hotels and mid-range hotels; for a historic property stay, the older hotels near the canal are the closest equivalent.
