Where to Stay in Lagos — Best Hotels & Beach Accommodation

Lagos has a better range of accommodation than anywhere else on the western Algarve. The old town has boutique hotels that use the original Algarve architecture — azulejo tiles, low whitewashed walls, interior courtyards — while the beach-adjacent areas have conventional resort hotels. Budget options exist and are better than average for the Algarve.

Old Town Boutique Hotels

Casa Mãe (Rua Dr. Faria e Silva 9) is the standout boutique property in Lagos. A converted 18th-century townhouse with original azulejos preserved throughout, a courtyard, and an interior that’s been restored rather than renovated. Around 20 rooms, rates €150–280 depending on season. The breakfast is particularly good. Books out early — reserve at least two months ahead for summer.

The old town has several smaller guesthouses at lower price points. Quality varies; check recent reviews as turnover in small properties can affect standards quickly.

Beach Hotels

Lagos Terrace Hotel is positioned on the hill above the beach area with views of the coast and a pool. Rates €120–200 in season. Not beachfront — you still walk — but the views compensate. Solid 4-star standard without being memorable.

Hotel Tivoli Lagos (Rua António Crisógono dos Santos) is a conventional 4-star with a pool, multiple restaurants, and good beach access. Rates €130–220. Well-run, reliable, busy in summer. More suited to families and group travellers than to independent travellers who want character.

Budget

Rising Cock Hostel (Travessa do Forno 14) has an improbable name and a good reputation. Central location in the old town, dorm beds from €18, private rooms from €55. The common areas are social and the management is active. A decent choice for solo travellers.

Pousada de Lagos Convento de São Sebastião is a government-run pousada in a converted 16th-century convent. Rates are moderate for what you get — around €100–160 — and the building is genuinely historic.

Booking Advice

Lagos’s peak season is mid-July through end of August. During this period:

  • Mid-range and boutique hotels sell out completely. Book three months ahead.
  • Prices for remaining rooms increase sharply in the two weeks before arrival.
  • Some hostels implement minimum-stay requirements (3–5 nights) in August.

September and October are significantly better value — 30–40% cheaper, smaller crowds, and the sea temperature is still warm from the summer (typically 20–22°C in October). Many visitors consider these the best months on the western Algarve.

Off-season (November–March): Lagos’s old town stays open year-round, which not all Algarve towns do. Some beach-adjacent hotels close entirely. The weather is mild but unpredictable. A good time for walking, cycling, and surfing at Sagres without summer crowds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should you book hotels in Lagos in summer?
For July and August, book three months ahead minimum. Good mid-range hotels and boutique properties sell out completely. October through May you can generally book two to three weeks ahead.
Is Lagos or Albufeira better for accommodation?
Lagos is better for most independent travellers — the old town has more character, the beaches require more effort but are better for it, and the eating options are more interesting. Albufeira suits package tourists and nightlife seekers.
Are there hotels close to Praia Dona Ana?
Several hotels and apartments are within a 10–15 minute walk. The beaches are all south of the old town and no hotel is directly on them — it's always a walk.
How do prices change in the off-season?
Prices drop 35–45% between October and May compared to August peaks. Some smaller guesthouses close entirely in winter. The weather in October is still very good.
