Port wine is made in the Douro Valley to the east but aged and shipped from Vila Nova de Gaia — the town directly across the Douro from Porto city centre. The lodges here (known as “caves” in Portuguese) have stored port in oak barrels since the 17th century. You can cross the Dom Luís I bridge on foot and be in the lodge district in 10 minutes from central Porto. The Porto weekend itinerary integrates cellar visits with the Douro Valley and Porto’s key sights into a structured 2–3 day plan. For the best restaurants to pair with an afternoon of port tasting, see our Porto restaurants guide.

How Port Wine Works

Port is a fortified wine — fermentation is stopped partway through by adding grape spirit, which preserves natural sugar and raises the alcohol content to around 20%. The Douro Valley’s schist soils and extreme summer heat concentrate flavour in the grapes.

Ruby port is aged 3–4 years in large wooden vats, keeping a deep red colour and fresh fruit character. Tawny port ages in small oak barrels for 10, 20, 30, or 40 years — the long oxidative ageing produces the amber colour and nutty, dried-fruit flavours. Vintage port is made from a single exceptional year, aged in bottles for decades.

Understanding the basic styles matters before you start tasting — it helps you ask better questions at the lodges.

Best Cellar Tours in Vila Nova de Gaia

Graham’s Lodge

One of the best visitor experiences in Gaia. The lodge sits high on the hillside above the river, with panoramic views of Porto from the terrace. The cellar tour covers the history of the Symington family (who own Graham’s alongside Dow’s and Warre’s) and takes you through rooms stacked with massive chestnut and oak barrels.

  • Duration: 1 hour (guided tour + tasting)
  • Price: approximately €18–35 per person as of 2026, depending on tasting level
  • Tastings: Basic (2 wines) to premium (5 wines including 20-year Tawny)
  • Best for: First-time visitors wanting a thorough introduction
  • How to book: Book online at grahams1820.com; same-day availability possible off-season

Taylor’s Lodge

Slightly less touristy than Graham’s — the Fladgate Partnership lodge. The Chip Dry White Port and Tonic served on their terrace is the best introduction to white port as an aperitif. The terrace overlooks Porto and the Douro — a genuine viewpoint.

  • Duration: 45–60 minutes
  • Price: approximately €16–28 per person as of 2026
  • Includes: Cellar tour + 2–3 wine tasting
  • Note: Their restaurant (The Barão Fladgate) is worth booking for lunch if you’re combining with a food stop

Ramos Pinto

A smaller lodge with an excellent museum of Art Nouveau wine posters — Ramos Pinto commissioned some of the finest early 20th-century advertising art in Portugal. More intimate than Graham’s or Taylor’s, and slightly cheaper.

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Price: approximately €12–20 per person as of 2026
  • Best for: Design-interested visitors and those wanting a quieter experience

Sandeman

Visually the most iconic — the black-cloaked “Don” figure appears on every bottle. Sandeman runs efficient 45-minute guided tours that explain the full port production process clearly. Large visitor capacity means you’re less likely to wait for a spot.

  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • Price: approximately €15–22 per person as of 2026
  • Includes: 2 wines; upgrade options available

Calem (with Fado Show)

Calem runs afternoon tours that combine the cellar visit with a 30-minute live fado performance in the cellar. It’s more theatrical than the other lodges — some visitors love it, others find it contrived. Worth knowing about if you haven’t planned a separate fado evening.

  • Duration: 1 hour 15 minutes (tour + fado + tasting)
  • Price: approximately €19–28 per person as of 2026

Beyond Gaia: Douro Valley Day Trips

The Douro Valley — where port grapes are grown — is 90–120 minutes east of Porto. The most dramatic stretch runs between Pinhão and Régua.

By train: Porto Campanhã to Pinhão takes 2h15 (€14 each way). The train follows the river through gorges and terraced vineyards — one of Europe’s most scenic rail routes. Book ahead in summer.

By guided tour: Multiple operators run day trips from Porto including a quinta visit, wine tasting, and scenic boat ride on the Douro. Typically 10–12 hours.

  • Operators: Douro Valley Wine Tour (Pick Up Porto), GetYourGuide listings
  • Price: approximately €65–95 per person as of 2026 (transport, guide, lunch, tastings included)
  • Best for: Visitors who want the full Douro experience without driving

Self-drive: Rent a car and follow the N222 road along the south bank of the Douro. It was voted the world’s most scenic route by Condé Nast Traveller. Allow a full day. Stop at Quinta do Crasto (reservations needed) or Quinta da Romaneira for tastings — call or email ahead.

Practical Details

Opening hours: Most lodges open daily 10am–6pm (May–October); some close Sunday afternoons October–April. Always check before visiting.

Best time of day: Late afternoon tastings (4–6pm) are quieter than the morning rush. The terraces are also more pleasant for post-tasting views once the heat drops.

How to get there: Walk across the upper deck of Dom Luís I bridge from Ribeira — 10 minutes on foot. Or take the cable car (Teleférico de Gaia) from the riverfront up to the lodge level (€9 one way, €13 return).

Budget planning: Allow €25–40 per person for a cellar tour and tasting. Add lunch or dinner at a Gaia restaurant (€20–35 per head) if staying for the afternoon. After the Tastings

Port wine is made upstream in the Douro Valley — the wine lodges in Gaia are the downstream end of the supply chain. Our Douro Valley guide covers the train journey from Porto to Pinhão (one of Europe’s best scenic rail routes), the quintas, and staying overnight in the valley. For Porto’s food beyond wine, see the Porto restaurants guide and food in Porto. The Porto city guide covers the Ribeira, transport, and other activities in full. Comparing Porto with Lisbon? Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book port wine tours in advance?
In summer (June–August), yes — tours at popular lodges like Graham's fill up fast. Book 3–7 days ahead online. Off-season, same-day booking at the lodge is usually fine.
How many wine tastings can you do in an afternoon in Gaia?
Two is comfortable — three if you pace yourself. Allow 1.5–2 hours per lodge visit including the cellar tour. More than three and you'll struggle to taste accurately.
Is there a difference between a cellar tour and a tasting-only visit?
Yes. The tour takes you through the barrel ageing rooms and includes historical context before the tasting. Tasting-only visits are cheaper and shorter — useful if you've already done a tour elsewhere.
