The Twin Lakes and What Makes Them Different
The green lake (Lagoa Verde) and blue lake (Lagoa Azul) sit in the same caldera but maintain different colours year-round. The colour difference is not a trick of the light or a seasonal variation - it is consistent and visible in all weathers. The Viewpoints

Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras

Crater Rim to Village Descent
A footpath descends from the Boca do Inferno viewpoint to the village floor - approximately 2km down, taking 30–40 minutes. The return climb is steeper and takes 45–60 minutes. This walk gives you both the panoramic rim perspective and the close-up village and lake-shore experience in the same visit.
Sete Cidades Crater Circuit (PR2 SMG)
The official trail runs approximately 12km around the full crater floor, taking 3–4 hours. It follows the lake shores, passes through the village, and crosses the causeway between the two lakes. The trail is well-marked and relatively flat within the caldera. Trail head starts at the village church. Bring water - there are limited facilities on the circuit.

Best Season
Sete Cidades is an all-year destination but May through September gives the most reliable combination of clear views and comfortable walking conditions. Morning visits are essential - the caldera frequently fills with cloud and mist from mid-afternoon, obscuring the lake views entirely. This is particularly true in June and July, when Atlantic fog rolls in from the southwest.
April and May offer lush green crater walls with hydrangea starting to bloom along the crater rim. June–August are the busiest months but also the most consistently clear in the morning window.
