The Twin Lakes and What Makes Them Different
The green lake (Lagoa Verde) and blue lake (Lagoa Azul) sit in the same caldera but maintain different colours year-round. The colour difference is not a trick of the light or a seasonal variation - it is consistent and visible in all weathers. Scientific consensus attributes the colour split to algae content, depth differences, and the way sediment and mineral composition interact with light at each lake. From the village on the crater floor, looking up at the surrounding cliffs - which drop around 300m to the water - gives a completely different perspective than the panoramic rim views above.
The village of Sete Cidades on the crater floor has a population of around 700. The parish church, a small café, and the lake access path are the main draws at village level.
The Viewpoints
Miradouro da Boca do Inferno
On the northern crater rim, this is the classic Sete Cidades photograph - both lakes visible simultaneously, the causeway bridge between them, the village below, and the Atlantic ocean stretching beyond the western crater wall. The viewpoint has parking (frequently busy July–August) and a kiosk selling coffee and snacks. The best light is in the morning when the sun hits the lakes from the east. Arrive before 10:00 in peak summer to avoid both the crowds and the car park bottleneck.
Vista do Rei
On the southern crater rim along the main road from Ponta Delgada. A slightly lower elevation than Boca do Inferno but with a more direct down-into-the-crater angle. Less visited than Boca do Inferno and often clearer of tour groups in the morning. Both viewpoints are usually visited together as a 15-minute drive apart.
Miradouro do Cerrado das Freiras
A smaller, lesser-known viewpoint on the western side of the caldera. More intimate scale, fewer people, and a different angle showing the green lake more prominently. Worth adding if you are self-driving and have time.
Walking Trails
Crater Rim to Village Descent
A footpath descends from the Boca do Inferno viewpoint to the village floor - approximately 2km down, taking 30–40 minutes. The return climb is steeper and takes 45–60 minutes. This walk gives you both the panoramic rim perspective and the close-up village and lake-shore experience in the same visit.
Sete Cidades Crater Circuit (PR2 SMG)
The official trail runs approximately 12km around the full crater floor, taking 3–4 hours. It follows the lake shores, passes through the village, and crosses the causeway between the two lakes. The trail is well-marked and relatively flat within the caldera. Trail head starts at the village church. Bring water - there are limited facilities on the circuit.

Self-drive is straightforward. The rim viewpoints are fully accessible by standard car and the road is paved throughout. From the Ponta Delgada marina roundabout, follow signs for Sete Cidades via the EN1-1A; the drive to Vista do Rei takes approximately 25 minutes.
Best Season
Sete Cidades is an all-year destination but May through September gives the most reliable combination of clear views and comfortable walking conditions. Morning visits are essential - the caldera frequently fills with cloud and mist from mid-afternoon, obscuring the lake views entirely. This is particularly true in June and July, when Atlantic fog rolls in from the southwest.
April and May offer lush green crater walls with hydrangea starting to bloom along the crater rim. June–August are the busiest months but also the most consistently clear in the morning window. September and October are excellent - calmer weather, fewer visitors, and autumn light that intensifies the green of the crater walls.
Winter months (November–March) are possible but cloud cover is frequent and the crater may be obscured for days at a time. If you visit outside peak season, check the local webcam (search Sete Cidades webcam) before making the drive.
