Nazaré Big Wave Challenge 2026/27

Nazaré’s Praia do Norte has produced some of the largest waves ever surfed, with record-breaking rides recorded at heights exceeding 26 metres. The underwater canyon that runs directly to the beach amplifies Atlantic swells in a way that occurs nowhere else in Europe, making Nazaré the global capital of big wave surfing during winter months.

How the Event Works

The Nazaré Tow Surfing Challenge is a WSL (World Surf League) Big Wave Tour event. Unlike fixed-date competitions, it runs on a call system: the event is activated with 24 to 48 hours’ notice when swell forecasts exceed 40 feet (approximately 12 metres face height) and wind conditions are suitable. The activation window runs roughly from mid-October through mid-March each season.

This means there is no guaranteed date to plan around. Surfers, photographers, and spectators monitor swell forecasts through apps like Surfline and Magic Seaweed, and the town fills rapidly when a big swell call goes out. Following the WSL and Nazaré local surf accounts on social media is the most reliable way to get early notice.

Watching from Land

The clifftop at Sítio, above Praia do Norte, is the standard spectating location and it is free. The Miradouro do Suberco and the area around the Nazaré Lighthouse (Farol de Nazaré) give direct sightlines down to the break. Even without a competition in progress, big swell days draw large crowds to watch surfers being towed by jet ski into the faces of the waves.

Be aware that the clifftop path becomes slippery when wet and can be genuinely dangerous in strong winds. Stay behind any barriers and well away from the cliff edge. Rogue waves have reached the clifftop during extreme swells.

Getting to Nazaré

Nazaré sits approximately 120 kilometres north of Lisbon. Direct buses run from Lisbon’s Rodoviária de Lisboa terminal (Campo Grande) and take around two hours; Rede Expressos and Rodoviária do Tejo both serve the route. By car, the A8 motorway makes it a roughly 90-minute drive depending on traffic.

Tips for Visitors

If you are travelling specifically to see big waves, build flexibility into your itinerary. A call with two days’ notice is common; arriving with a four-to-five-day window gives you the best chance of being present when conditions fire. November and February have historically produced the most consistent large swells at Nazaré.
