Rip Curl Pro Peniche 2026

Supertubos is the wave that put Peniche on the global surf map. A powerful, hollow beach break that throws short, intense barrels in both directions, it is consistently ranked among the best competition waves in the world. The WSL Championship Tour has returned here each October for more than a decade, with the world’s top surfers competing for points that often decide the year’s title race.

The Competition

The Rip Curl Pro Peniche is a waiting-period event, typically assigned a two-week window in October during which competition runs when conditions reach the required quality. When Supertubos fires at three feet or above with clean offshore winds, the contest is called on with a few hours’ notice. Competition days run from around 08:00 to 17:00, with heats of 20 to 35 minutes.

The WSL runs the event across multiple rounds over several competition days, culminating in a final that can come as late as day 10 or 11 of the waiting period. The 2026 competition window and exact schedule will be confirmed by the WSL closer to the event; check worldsurfleague.com for the official start date.

Watching the Contest

Spectating at Supertubos is free. The beach at Praia de Supertubos, roughly 2 kilometres south of Peniche town centre, has a flat sandy area directly above the break where crowds gather during competition. The WSL erects scaffolding bleachers and a broadcast setup on the beach; these are open to the public on a first-come basis. Arrive by 07:30 on competition days to get a good position.

Live scoring and heat schedules are available on the WSL app and website. The surf community in Peniche is well connected; surf shops in town are usually ahead of official announcements about whether conditions will qualify for a call.

Getting to Peniche

Peniche is approximately 90 kilometres north of Lisbon. Rede Expressos runs regular buses from Lisbon’s Campo Grande terminal; the journey takes around 75 minutes and costs approximately €9 each way. By car, the A8 motorway to Óbidos followed by the IC1 north takes about 60 to 75 minutes. Parking near Supertubos beach is free but limited on competition days; arriving early solves this.
