TAP Air Portugal Privatisation: Bids Submitted July 2026

Portugal’s long-running effort to sell a majority stake in TAP Air Portugal moved to a decisive stage last week. Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM both submitted binding bids on July 29–30, 2026, according to the Portuguese government and multiple financial sources. A preferred bidder is expected to be named in August or early September.

Why This Sale Matters

TAP received a €3.2 billion state bailout during the pandemic and the Portuguese government has been legally required to privatise it since. After several false starts, 2026 is the most advanced the process has reached. Both bidders have publicly confirmed strategic interest: Lufthansa wants to add Lisbon as a hub for Brazil and Anglophone Africa routes, while Air France-KLM sees synergies with its existing Lisbon and Porto frequencies.

The Portuguese government is retaining a β€œgolden share” in either scenario, meaning national route guarantees to the Azores and Madeira are expected to be protected regardless of who wins.

What It Could Mean for Travellers

In the near term β€” through at least 2026 β€” nothing changes. TAP continues operating under its current structure, and all existing bookings are valid. Both bidders have signalled continued Lisbon hub operations.

Medium-term, ownership by a major European alliance partner is generally positive for connectivity. Lufthansa ownership would likely mean smoother connections through Frankfurt and Munich; Air France-KLM would improve Paris CDG and Amsterdam links. Fares on competitive routes have historically remained stable in the first two years post-acquisition.

Lisbon travellers can still book with confidence: Lisbon remains the flagship hub with the highest frequency routes from the UK, Ireland, and North America. Porto is similarly well-served; our guide to Porto covers the city’s growing direct route network.
