The Atlantic Festival in Funchal, Madeira marks its 20th edition this year, running from 5 to 28 June 2026 with an international fireworks competition at the heart of each weekend. International pyrotechnic teams compete every Saturday evening above Funchal’s natural harbour — one of the most dramatic settings for a fireworks display in Europe. Between weekends, the programme extends across the city with live music, cultural performances and outdoor food events.

Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, accessible year-round by direct flight from most major European airports. Lisbon serves as the most common transit point for long-haul arrivals connecting onward to Funchal Airport. June delivers some of Madeira’s most reliable weather: mild temperatures around 22°C, low rainfall and the island’s interior valleys at their most lush. The Atlantic Festival coincides with peak season, so book accommodation early — hotels along the Funchal seafront and in the Lido district fill quickly for the Saturday fireworks nights.

Madeira’s food and drink are worth the visit alone. Espetada, beef skewers cooked over laurel wood, is the island’s signature dish; bolo do caco flatbread and poncha rum cocktails round out the table. The festival animates the harbour waterfront and public gardens each weekend, turning the city into a natural outdoor venue.

For travellers combining Madeira with mainland Portugal, Porto and Faro — gateway to the Algarve — are both straightforward return destinations served by TAP Air Portugal and several budget carriers. TAP confirmed normal operations have resumed after the nationwide strike that disrupted services on 3 June.

Entry to Madeira follows the same rules as mainland Portugal. EU citizens travel on national identity cards; non-EU visitors from visa-exempt countries — USA, UK, Canada, Australia — enter visa-free for up to 90 days on a valid passport. ETIAS, the EU pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals, is scheduled to launch in late 2026.
