A nationwide general strike is confirmed for Portugal on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, with the aviation sector warning that up to 500 flights could be cancelled across the country. Travellers with bookings on or around that date should act now.

What Is Happening

Workers across multiple sectors voted to join the one-day action, which is a direct response to proposed government employment reforms. The Portuguese cabin crew union SNPVAC voted 79 per cent in favour of striking. TAP Air Portugal — by far the country’s largest carrier — expects up to 300 of its daily flights to be affected. Regional carriers Portugália and SATA have also indicated disruption.

The strike affects more than aviation: doctors, public transport workers, and other public sector staff are expected to participate, meaning disruption across Lisbon, Porto, and other cities will extend beyond airports.

Affected Airports

Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon and Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto are the two main hubs. Faro Airport, which serves the Algarve, will also be affected.

Ryanair and easyJet have said they expect to operate normally, but ground handling disruptions at Portuguese airports could still cause knock-on delays even for carriers not participating in the strike.

What To Do

Check your flight status with your airline as soon as possible. If your TAP, Portugália, or SATA flight is cancelled, airlines operating within the EU are obliged to rebook you on an alternative service at no additional cost or offer a full refund.

Build in flexibility around 2 and 4 June as well. Knock-on disruptions the day before and after a strike are common as airlines proactively reschedule and aircraft and crew find themselves out of position.

Travellers due to arrive in Portugal on 3 June for onward connections, cruises, or tours should contact their travel insurance provider. Our Portugal travel insurance guide explains what kind of cover applies to strike-related cancellations.

Timing

With peak summer season beginning in June, the timing of the strike is particularly disruptive. Travellers have roughly one week to make contingency plans. Flexibility and direct contact with your airline are the two most effective tools right now.
