Santos Populares 2026: Lisbon and Porto Festival Guide
Portugal’s biggest street festival season is upon us. Santos Populares — the Month of the Popular Saints — fills June with neighbourhood parties, sardine grills, street music, and one of the most joyful atmospheres in Europe. If you are in Lisbon or Porto this month, here is what to expect.
Lisbon: Santo António (12–13 June)
The centrepiece of Lisbon’s Santos Populares is the Festa de Santo António, honouring the city’s patron saint. The highlight is the Marchas Populares, a competitive street parade along Avenida da Liberdade on the night of 12 June (from 21:00), where each of Lisbon’s historic parishes competes with elaborate costumes and choreographed performances.
Throughout the night of 12–13 June, the old neighbourhoods of Alfama, Mouraria, Bica and Intendente transform into open-air parties called arraiais — think trestle tables, paper lanterns, grilled sardines, bifanas (pork sandwiches), and live music until dawn. There is no entry charge; most arraiais are free.
Practical tips for Lisbon:
- Book dinner reservations in Alfama well in advance — restaurants fill quickly on the night of 12 June.
- Wear comfortable shoes; cobblestone streets get very crowded.
- Metro services run extended hours overnight on the 12th to handle demand.
- Be mindful of pickpockets in dense crowds on Avenida da Liberdade.
Porto: São João (23–24 June)
Porto’s equivalent celebration takes place on the night of 23–24 June, marking the feast of São João. The city’s riverfront at Ribeira fills with revellers, street food stalls, and — one of Porto’s most distinctive traditions — plastic hammers used to tap strangers on the head as a sign of good luck. The evening culminates in a fireworks display over the River Douro around midnight.
The Foz neighbourhood and the hillside streets of the historic centre are also alive with arraiais through the night. Porto’s São João is considered by many to be the more exuberant of the two festivals.
Practical tips for Porto:
- Accommodation books out early for the night of 23–24 June; if you have not reserved yet, check availability now.
- The riverside is pedestrianised on the festival night — plan your approach from the upper city on foot.
- Embrace the hammer tradition — refusing the playful tap is considered poor form.
Beyond Lisbon and Porto
Santos Populares extends across Portugal. São Pedro is celebrated on 29 June in many towns, extending the festivities to the end of the month. Guimarães, which is simultaneously hosting its Feira Afonsina medieval fair from 11–14 June, offers a particularly rich cultural programme this week.
