Quick Answer

The best times to visit Lagos are May to June and September to October. These shoulder months offer warm seas, the caves and arches at Ponta da Piedade at their most accessible, and prices well below the July-August peak. Winter is quiet but mild, and Lagos’s compact old town and castle walls are worth exploring year-round. Peak Season: July to August

Lagos peaks hard in July and August. The beaches - Meia Praia (2km of sand east of town), Dona Ana, Porto de Mós, and Praia da Luz to the west - fill to capacity on good weather days. Meia Praia is the largest and most manageable; the more dramatic but smaller pocket beaches below the cliffs, like Praia do Camilo, require arriving early.

The boat trips to the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade are the town’s most popular activity, and they sell out quickly. Most operators launch from the town marina, with the shortest trips taking about an hour. Kayak rentals for self-guided exploration of the cave arches also become scarce by mid-morning. Booking the previous evening or early morning is standard practice. We cover this in more detail in Ponta da Piedade Tours Lagos.

Despite the crowds, summer does deliver: 31-33°C sunshine, warm Atlantic water at 23-24°C, long evenings, and a lively old town restaurant scene. August in particular has a party atmosphere, with the main Rua 25 de Abril and surrounding streets busy until late.

Shoulder Season: May to June and September to October

These are the months that repeat visitors to the western Algarve often prefer. In late May, the cliff walks between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade (about 3km each way) are walkable in full morning sun without heat exhaustion. The wildflowers on the cliffs - including the distinctive sea daffodil - are still visible in early May.

Sea temperatures of 19-21°C in May-June are swimmable for most visitors, and the boat caves tours run freely without the summer scramble for seats. September brings sea temperatures that have built throughout summer (22-23°C) alongside noticeably quieter beaches from the third week onward.

October is increasingly popular with cyclists using the EuroVelo 1 Atlantic coast route, which passes through the western Algarve. Temperatures of 22-24°C are ideal for long-distance cycling, and the coastal path network between Lagos, Luz, and Sagres is at its most pleasant.

Off Season: November to April

Lagos shuts down more completely in winter than the larger Algarve towns. Some restaurants on the main tourist streets close from November, and several surf schools and water sports operators operate on reduced or suspended schedules. However, the old town core - with its 18th-century buildings, the Forte Ponta da Bandeira, the medieval walls, and the covered market - remains fully accessible year-round.

The west-facing coast around Sagres, 30km from Lagos, comes alive in winter for surfing. The beaches at Castelejo, Cordoama, and Amado are sheltered enough from the prevailing north winds for intermediate surfers, while Praia do Tonel near Sagres gets serious Atlantic swells from October through March.

Temperatures average 16-18°C in January and February - genuinely mild enough to walk the cliffs and explore the town on a sunny day. Hotel prices drop dramatically: a seafront room that costs €220 in August can fall to €70-80 in January.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month to visit Lagos?
June is excellent: sea temperatures reach 20-21°C, the grottos and arches at Ponta da Piedade are fully accessible by kayak and boat, and prices are noticeably lower than July. The days are long (sunset after 9pm), and the old town restaurants and bars are open and lively without being overwhelmingly crowded.
What is the cheapest time to visit Lagos?
January to March offer the lowest prices, with mid-range hotels dropping to roughly half their August rates. Some smaller restaurants and surf schools close in January-February, but the main town remains operational. Temperatures average 16-18°C and rain occurs, though sunny days are common between spells.
When should I avoid visiting Lagos?
July and August bring packed beaches, peak hotel prices, and the highest temperatures in the western Algarve (averaging 31-33°C). The boat trips to the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade are fully booked from 8am, and the town's narrow streets can feel congested. If you visit in summer, the early morning on the cliffs before 9am is genuinely spectacular and uncrowded.
