August is one of the busiest months in Portugal’s festival calendar, and 2026 is no exception. Three events of national and international significance run across the country over the next few weeks, covering everything from indie and alternative music to medieval reenactments. Here is what is happening and what travellers need to know.

Viagem Medieval (through 9 August) β€” Santa Maria da Feira

The Viagem Medieval em Terra de Santa Maria, held in the town of Santa Maria da Feira south of Porto, is one of the largest historical festivals in Iberia. The event recreates 15th-century life around the town’s imposing castle, with market stalls, jousting displays, fire shows, and theatrical performances spread across the old town.

The festival runs through 9 August. If you are in the Porto area this week, a day trip to Feira is straightforward β€” the town is about 30 km south of Porto and reachable by train from CampanhΓ£ station. The festival draws very large crowds, particularly at weekends, so arriving early in the day is recommended.

Paredes de Coura (12–15 August) β€” Paredes de Coura, Minho

Paredes de Coura is one of Portugal’s most celebrated independent music festivals, set beside the TaboΓ£o reservoir in the Minho region near the Spanish border. The 2026 edition headliners include Kneecap, Bloc Party, and Wet Leg, with a full programme across multiple stages.

The festival site is approximately 90 km north of Porto. Most festival-goers either camp on site or stay in Viana do Castelo and Braga, both of which have reasonable accommodation availability at this point. A hire car is the most practical way to reach the venue. Paredes de Coura has a strong reputation for its setting and relatively relaxed atmosphere compared to Portugal’s larger festivals.

Kalorama (28–30 August) β€” Parque da Bela Vista, Lisbon

Kalorama returns to Lisbon’s Parque da Bela Vista for its 2026 edition, having established itself as one of the most musically ambitious events in southern Europe in a short time. The 2026 lineup includes Robbie Williams, Grace Jones, and Ms Lauryn Hill across the three days.

The Parque da Bela Vista is reachable by metro (Chelas station on the Line 2 / Verde). Lisbon accommodation is tight in late August β€” if you are planning to attend, hotels and serviced apartments will be significantly easier to book for nights mid-week around the festival rather than on the festival dates themselves. Our Lisbon city guide has accommodation areas to consider.

Practical Notes for Festival Travel

August is peak season across Portugal. Accommodation in Porto, Braga, and Lisbon is expensive and limited. Booking well in advance β€” or looking at towns slightly outside the main cities β€” makes a significant difference to cost.

Temperatures regularly exceed 30Β°C at all three events. Sun protection, hydration, and light clothing are essentials. Our Portugal practical guide covers what to pack for summer travel. For a broader look at what is happening this season, see our events calendar.
