Afro Nation Portugal returned to Praia da Rocha in Portimão for its sixth edition from 3 to 5 July 2026, drawing tens of thousands of attendees from over 100 countries to the Algarve’s largest beach stage. The festival is confirmed at this location through 2030.

Lineup and Stages

This year’s headliners were Asake, Tyla, Wizkid and Burna Boy. The festival runs four stages covering Afrobeats, Amapiano, hip-hop, R&B and dancehall. A new addition for 2026 was the Afrotronic electronic stage, broadening the lineup beyond its traditional Afrobeats core. Uncle Waffles headlined the Piano People Stage.

Getting There

Portimão sits roughly 70 km west of Faro Airport (FAO), which handles the majority of Algarve-bound flights from the UK, Ireland and northern Europe. The transfer takes approximately one hour by taxi or pre-booked private transfer. Public bus connections from Faro to Portimão exist but are slow - allow 90+ minutes and a change at Albufeira or Lagos.

From Lagos, Portimão is 20 minutes by train on the Algarve line (CP intercidades and regional services both stop at Portimão station). This makes Lagos a practical base if accommodation in Portimão itself is sold out.

Accommodation

Praia da Rocha hotels fill months in advance around Afro Nation. Afro Nation launched official hotel packages in 2026 combining a ticket with accommodation, breakfast, late checkout and direct shuttle access to the site - check the official website for current availability.

Practical Notes

  • Tickets: The 2026 festival ran 3–5 July. Watch afronation.com for early-bird 2027 announcements - prices rise significantly once day-one allocations sell out.
  • Weather: Portimão in early July averages 27–31°C with minimal cloud cover. Sun protection and hydration are non-negotiable for three consecutive days outdoors.
  • Local transport: Festival-specific shuttles run from central Portimão and from designated pick-up points. Taxis and Uber are available but wait times spike heavily at closing time each night - plan to leave before the main acts finish or budget for a longer wait.
  • Currency: Card payments are widely accepted across the Algarve. ATMs are available in central Portimão.

Afro Nation has established Portimão as a credible anchor point for music tourism in the Algarve, adding a third major event - after Rock in Rio Lisboa and Super Bock Super Rock - to Portugal’s summer festival calendar.
