Faial Airport (HOR) - Aeroporto das Flores is on Flores island; Faial’s airport is known as Aeroporto da Horta, IATA code HOR. It sits on the north coast of the island, approximately 5km from the centre of Horta, the island’s capital and only town of note. Flights operate primarily from Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) with SATA Air Açores, plus seasonal connections to Lisbon and Porto with Azores Airlines. Most visitors arrive on short inter-island hops from Ponta Delgada or on direct mainland flights during summer.
Taxi From Faial Airport
The taxi rank is directly outside the Arrivals exit. Faial’s taxi fleet is small - during peak summer arrivals it can be worth asking your accommodation to arrange a pick-up if you’re arriving on a busy afternoon flight.
| Destination | Approximate Cost (2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Horta city centre | €10–15 | 8–10 min |
| Horta marina area | €10–14 | 8 min |
| Flamengos (south coast village) | €14–20 | 12 min |
| Capelo (near Capelinhos) | €25–35 | 20–25 min |
Night rates (21:00–06:00) typically add around 20%. Luggage charges may apply. The taxi from HOR to Horta is among the shortest airport transfers in Portugal - the airport and town are practically neighbours.
English is widely spoken among Faial taxi drivers, especially those who regularly serve the marina and the cruise-ship dock in Horta.
Private Airport Transfers
Pre-booked private transfers are available from local operators and international booking platforms. These are particularly useful if you’re arriving with a group or with a lot of diving or outdoor gear - Faial is a major wreck-diving destination.
- Cost: approximately €20–30 for a private vehicle as of 2026
- Booking: Compare Faial airport transfer options
- Best for: groups, families, or visitors with significant luggage or equipment
- Includes: named driver at Arrivals, direct drop to your villa or hotel
Horta is a sailing waypoint on the transatlantic route and many arrivals are sailors meeting charter vessels in the marina - a private transfer with storage space for kit bags is practical here.
Car Hire at Faial Airport
Car hire desks are located in the Arrivals building at HOR. Having your own vehicle on Faial is strongly recommended if you plan to explore beyond Horta - many of the island’s highlights are only accessible by road.
- Cost: from approximately €30–50/day in low season; from €55–80/day in July and August as of 2026
- Book well in advance: the fleet on Faial is small, and summer demand regularly exceeds supply
- Roads: Faial has good paved roads but the route to Ponta dos Capelinhos involves some narrow sections; a compact car is easier than an SUV in the western volcanic zone
- Local operators: Autatlantis is the main local provider; international brands have limited presence at HOR
Compare Faial car hire rates - booking at least 2–3 weeks ahead in summer prevents paying premium last-minute rates.
Getting Around Faial After Arriving
With a hire car from the airport, Faial’s key attractions are within easy reach:
- Horta marina and Peter Café Sport: 8–10 minutes from the airport
- Caldeira crater viewpoint: 20 minutes (the 2.5km rim walk is one of the best in the Azores)
- Ponta dos Capelinhos: 25 minutes - the volcano that erupted in 1957–58 and extended the island’s area; now a UNESCO-listed site
- Cabeço Verde (hydrangea viewpoint): 15 minutes
- North coast beaches (Faja do Conde, Varadouro): 10–15 minutes
A taxi from Horta to Capelinhos costs approximately €25–35 one way - for day trips from Horta to the western end of the island, a hire car is far more economical.
Ferry From Horta Port
Faial is connected to Pico island by a regular ferry operated by Atlânticoline. The crossing from Horta port to Madalena (Pico) takes approximately 30 minutes and runs several times daily. Ferry schedules and fares are available on the Atlânticoline website - as of 2026, a single adult fare was approximately €3–4. This is one of the most scenic short ferry routes in the Azores, with Pico’s massive volcanic cone directly ahead throughout the crossing.
From Horta port, São Jorge is also accessible by ferry (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to Velas). Advance booking is strongly recommended in July and August.
