Getting Around Faial After Arriving

With a hire car from the airport, Faial’s key attractions are within easy reach:

• Ponta dos Capelinhos: 25 minutes - the volcano that erupted in 1957–58 and extended the island’s area; now a UNESCO-listed site
• Cabeço Verde (hydrangea viewpoint): 15 minutes
• North coast beaches (Faja do Conde, Varadouro): 10–15 minutes

A taxi from Horta to Capelinhos costs approximately €25–35 one way - for day trips from Horta to the western end of the island, a hire car is far more economical.

Ferry From Horta Port

Faial is connected to Pico island by a regular ferry operated by Atlânticoline. The crossing from Horta port to Madalena (Pico) takes approximately 30 minutes and runs several times daily. Ferry schedules and fares are available on the Atlânticoline website - as of 2026, a single adult fare was approximately €3–4. This is one of the most scenic short ferry routes in the Azores, with Pico’s massive volcanic cone directly ahead throughout the crossing.

From Horta port, São Jorge is also accessible by ferry (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to Velas). Advance booking is strongly recommended in July and August.
