Peniche is a working fishing port on a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic - not a resort town by design, but one of Portugal’s most important surf destinations by reputation. The Supertubos break is one of the best beach breaks in Europe; the Berlenga Island reserve is among the most dramatic day trips on the Silver Coast; and the old fort by the harbour has served as everything from a Moorish stronghold to a political prison. The town has a rough edge that suit visitors who come for the sea and the surf rather than polished tourism. See our Peniche guide for the full overview.

Peniche Areas: Where to Stay

Peniche Town Centre

The peninsula town itself - around the harbour and the old market - is the most central base. The Berlenga ferry departs from the dock here, the fish market runs each morning, and the best seafood restaurants are within walking distance. The beaches on the town side are generally rockier and less swim-friendly than Baleal.

Baleal

Baleal is a small islet village connected to Peniche by a road causeway, 4km to the north. The beaches on either side of the causeway are sheltered from the full Atlantic swell, making Baleal the first choice for beginner surfers. Most surf schools and surf hostels are based here. A livelier social scene than the town, more international, and slightly more expensive for accommodation.

Consolação and South Side

The southern beaches of the peninsula - below Supertubos - are quieter and have a few guesthouses and rentals. Closer to the main surf break; better for experienced surfers who want to be near the action without the Baleal crowd.

Practical Advice for Peniche

The Berlenga ferry books out fast in summer. July and August ferries sell out weeks in advance. Book online as soon as your dates are confirmed. The island’s campsite also books out - if you want to stay overnight on Berlenga, plan 2–3 months ahead.

Supertubos is not a beginner break. This cannot be overstated. The barrel wave here is steep, powerful, and breaks in shallow water. It is a world-class break for experienced surfers. If you have not surfed hollow beach breaks before, do not paddle out at Supertubos.

The fish market is worth the early start. The lota (fish auction) at Peniche harbour runs from around 7am. It is one of the most active fish markets on the Silver Coast - tuna, swordfish, sardines, and shellfish. The restaurants near the harbour use the same stock.

For Ericeira comparison: our Sintra guide covers the nearby coast; Ericeira is the other major surf hub 50km south.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Peniche good for beginner surfers?
Peniche has waves for all levels. Supertubos is a world-class and genuinely dangerous break for advanced surfers only. The beaches on the southern side of the peninsula - Baleal particularly - are more sheltered and appropriate for beginners, with several surf schools operating there. If you are a beginner, Baleal is the better base.
How do you get to Berlenga Island from Peniche?
By ferry from Peniche dock. The crossing takes approximately 1 hour and operates from June to September (daily in July and August, reduced frequency in June and September). Round-trip tickets cost approximately €22–€25. The island has a small fortress, dramatic rock formations, and a protected marine reserve. Accommodation on the island is very limited - most visitors do a day trip.
Is Peniche better as a base than Nazaré for surfing?
Peniche has more consistent beginner-friendly breaks at Baleal and Lagide, and a larger surf industry infrastructure - more schools, board hire, and community. Nazaré is famous for the big wave spectacle at Praia do Norte, which most visitors watch rather than surf. For actually learning to surf, Peniche and Ericeira are the better choices.
When is the best time to visit Peniche?
For surfing, October to April has the best swell but coldest water (14–17°C). May and June combine decent waves with warmer weather. July and August are crowded, the surf can be flat, but Berlenga trips are easy. The Rip Curl Pro Peniche WCT event (when held) draws the global surf tour - dates vary year to year.
