Peniche Travel Guide - Surf, Baleal & Berlenga Island

Peniche is a working fishing town on a peninsula 90 km north of Lisbon, best known internationally for Supertubos — a beach break that hosts the World Surf League Championship Tour. Away from the surf, Peniche has a 16th-century fortress, a daily fish market, and ferry access to Berlenga Island, a granite archipelago and marine reserve 12 km offshore.

Getting to Peniche

By bus from Lisbon: Rede Expressos runs direct coaches from Sete Rios bus terminal. Journey time approximately 1 hour 20 minutes; tickets from approximately €9. Buses stop at Peniche bus station, a 10-minute walk from the waterfront.

By car from Lisbon: A8 motorway north, then IC1 west. Allow 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes depending on traffic.

There is no train station in Peniche.

Surf

Supertubos is a hollow beach break known for powerful barrels best suited to intermediate-advanced surfers. The WSL event typically takes place in October.

Baleal (connected to Peniche by a sandy isthmus) has gentler waves on the lagoon side, making it popular for surf lessons. Surf schools on Baleal charge approximately €35–45 for a two-hour group lesson including board and wetsuit.

Berlenga Island

Berlenga Grande is a nature reserve 12 km west of Peniche, accessible by ferry (approximately 1 hour). The island has dramatic sea caves, the 17th-century Forte de São João Baptista (basic accommodation available — book months ahead in summer), nesting seabirds, and excellent snorkelling in clear Atlantic water.

Ferry tickets cost approximately €20–25 return. Boats run from April to October; departures from Peniche harbour, usually at 9:30am and returning in the afternoon. Only 300 day visitors are permitted on the island daily — book ahead in July and August.

Peniche Fortress (Fortaleza de Peniche)

The 16th-century fortress at the tip of the peninsula was used as a political prison during the Salazar regime, including for opposition leader Álvaro Cunhal who escaped from it in 1960. The museum inside documents this history. Entry approximately €3; open Tuesday–Sunday.

Where to Stay

Baleal village has the most atmosphere for surfers — small guesthouses, surf hostels, and restaurants directly on the beach road. Prices from approximately €50 per night for a hostel dorm, €70–100 for a private room.

Peniche town centre (around the fortress and fish market) has mid-range hotels and pensões from approximately €70–90 per night.

Where to Eat

Peniche is a fishing port — seafood is the point. The waterfront restaurants near the port serve grilled fresh fish, caldeirada (Portuguese fish stew), and arroz de tamboril (monkfish rice). Prices are lower than comparable coastal towns further south. A grilled fish lunch for two with wine runs approximately €25–35.

The daily fish market (Lota de Peniche) is worth seeing early morning, though it operates mainly as a wholesale auction rather than retail.

Day Trip from Lisbon

Peniche works as a day trip from Lisbon on the Rede Expressos bus. Take the 7am or 8am bus, spend the morning at Berlenga (ferry departures permitting), and return in the afternoon. Alternatively, pair Peniche with Óbidos (30 minutes south by bus or car) — the medieval walled town makes an easy half-day addition.
