Aveiro sits on a lagoon system - the Ria de Aveiro - that gives the city its character and its nickname. The comparisons to Venice are overstated (Aveiro is a real working city, not a museum), but the moliceiro boats on the Central Canal, the Art Nouveau architecture, and the ovos moles pastries make it one of the most distinctive stops in northern Portugal. See our Aveiro guide for the full picture of what to do.

Aveiro Areas: Where to Stay
Canal District (Centro Histórico)
The area immediately around the Central Canal and the fish market square is the most atmospheric place to stay. Hotels here give you canal-view rooms in some cases, and the moliceiro departure points, covered market, and best restaurants are all within a few minutes on foot. This is the first choice for most visitors.
The historic centre is compact - Aveiro is not a large city - so even properties a 10-minute walk from the canal put you close to everything.
University Quarter (Baixa)
Aveiro has a significant student population, and the area around the University of Aveiro campus has a range of budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels. More lively at night than the historic centre, slightly cheaper, and a longer walk to the moliceiro docks. Suits visitors on longer stays or those travelling with university-age groups.
Costa Nova
The beach village of Costa Nova, 9km west, has a small selection of seasonal rentals and guesthouses. Staying here suits visits focused on the beach rather than the city - it is quieter but requires a bike or bus to reach Aveiro’s sights. Off season (October to April) most Costa Nova accommodation closes.

Practical Advice for Aveiro
Book a moliceiro tour early. The canal boat tours are popular and depart on a set schedule from the quay near the fish market. In July and August, morning slots fill by 9am. Book in person the evening before or through your hotel.
Ovos moles are the local pastry. These egg-yolk and sugar confections shaped like shells and fish are Aveiro’s culinary signature - made with the egg yolks left over from the starched habits of the local convent. Several competing shops near the canal market sell them. Try more than one; the quality varies noticeably.
The train from Porto is fast. The Alfa Pendular from Porto Campanhã to Aveiro takes 55 minutes and costs approximately €12. Regional trains also serve the route but take longer. The station is a 10-minute walk from the canal.
Hire a bike for Costa Nova. The city has a flat cycling path along the Ria from the centre to Costa Nova. It takes 35–40 minutes at a casual pace and avoids the bus timetable entirely.
