Olhão is a working fishing port of around 45,000 people on the eastern Algarve coast, 8 km east of Faro. Its distinction within the Algarve is the old town’s Moorish-influenced architecture — flat-roofed, whitewashed, cube-shaped houses that look more North African than southern European — and its position as the main access point for the Ria Formosa natural park’s barrier islands.

Pedras Verdes Guesthouse (Fuseta) is on the eastern edge of the Ria Formosa — a rural setting with the lagoon visible from the property. From approximately €70–110 per night as of 2026. Island Accommodation
Armona Island: The campsite on Armona offers the most affordable accommodation option in the Olhão area — pitches from approximately €12 per person per night in summer as of 2026, with bungalow and cabin rental also available from approximately €45–80. An island stay is genuinely unusual in Portugal — the island is car-free, reached by a 15-minute ferry from Olhão, and the beach is a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock. Culatra Island: Culatra is a larger island with a permanent fishing community and a small guesthouse — basic accommodation for those wanting to stay on the island itself. From Faro by train: Frequent service (10 minutes, approximately €2). The most practical way to reach Olhão without a car.
From Tavira: 24 km west by road, approximately 25 minutes. Regular train service (20–25 minutes, approximately €3).

Best Time to Book
March through May: Excellent conditions — the fish market is at full operation, Ria Formosa migratory birds are present (flamingos peak in spring), and the old town is quiet. One of the best times to visit without summer crowds.
June through September: Ferry services to the islands increase significantly, the island beaches are in full summer mode. August sees the seafood festival bringing additional visitors. Book guesthouses 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August.
October through November: Post-peak, very good conditions. Water still warm enough for swimming on the islands (water 21–23°C). Market and restaurants fully operational. Often the best value-to-experience combination.
December through February: Quiet. Some smaller guesthouses reduce hours or close. The fish market and old town function normally. Not a beach destination in winter but a pleasant week of markets and the Ria Formosa bird reserve.
