FlixBus Launches Budget Lisbon-to-Algarve Route from 29 September 2026

The Algarve coastline near Faro — now reachable by FlixBus from Lisbon from €2.99

Budget bus operator FlixBus is launching a direct connection between Lisbon and the Algarve from 29 September 2026, with tickets starting from €2.99. The service runs from Lisbon’s Sete Rios Terminal to five Algarve destinations: Faro, Albufeira, Lagos, Portimão, Armação de Pêra, and Quarteira.

The launch brings new competition to a route currently dominated by Rede Expressos and Eva Transportes, the national bus operators, and offers an affordable alternative to the three-to-four-hour drive or budget flights between the capital and the Algarve.

Routes and Departure Points

FlixBus will operate from Sete Rios Terminal in Lisbon, the city’s main intercity bus hub, which is connected directly to Jardim Zoológico metro station on the Blue Line. From Lisbon’s Oriente station or the centre, allow 20 to 25 minutes to reach Sete Rios by metro.

Southbound stops from Lisbon:

  • Faro (the Algarve’s regional capital)
  • Albufeira
  • Portimão
  • Armação de Pêra
  • Quarteira
  • Lagos (westernmost stop)

Journey times vary by destination — roughly 3.5 hours to Faro, 4.5 hours to Lagos depending on the number of stops on a given service.

Pricing

FlixBus uses dynamic pricing, so the headline €2.99 fare applies to early bookings on less-popular departure times. Realistic pricing for most journeys sits between €8 and €20 depending on how far in advance you book and which service you choose. This compares to Rede Expressos fares typically ranging from €18 to €28 for the same route.

Luggage is included: one carry-on and one hold bag are standard with a FlixBus ticket.

How This Compares to Other Options

Getting from Lisbon to the Algarve has always been straightforward, but price-sensitive travellers had fewer options:

  • Rede Expressos / Eva: reliable, direct, but more expensive than FlixBus at peak times
  • Car hire: flexibility for exploring the Algarve coast and hinterland, but costs €40–80 per day plus tolls and fuel
  • Ryanair / easyJet: flights to Faro can be under €20 one-way but require airport check-in time and baggage fees
  • Train: no direct rail link; a combination of Alfa Pendular to Faro via Tunes is possible but involves changes and is slower than the bus for most Algarve destinations

FlixBus fills a gap for single travellers and couples travelling light who want budget-friendly, city-centre-to-city-centre connections without the complexity of flying.

Booking

Tickets are available through the FlixBus app and website. The app allows seat selection, live tracking, and straightforward changes for a small fee. Bus departures from Sete Rios will display on the app’s live departure board from 29 September.

Planning Your Algarve Visit

The autumn period from late September through October is one of the most pleasant times to visit the Algarve. Temperatures drop from summer peaks to a comfortable 20–24°C, sea temperatures remain warm enough for swimming, and crowds thin considerably. The region’s dramatic sea cliffs, sea caves, and hiking trails along the Via Algarviana are at their best in this period.

For where to spend your time once you arrive, our Faro city guide covers the historic old town, Ria Formosa Natural Park, and day-trip options east toward Tavira. Further west, the Lagos guide covers Ponta da Piedade, the old town’s beaches, and the surf spots around Sagres.
