Vilamoura is a purpose-built resort on the central Algarve coast, 30 km west of Faro airport. Unlike most Algarve towns, there is no historic fishing village underneath the development — the layout is entirely planned, with five golf courses, a large marina, hotel zones, and a casino all designed as a single destination. It is polished and well-maintained, and the absence of a chaotic town centre is part of the appeal for those who come specifically for golf, sailing, and beach.

Marina and Seafront Hotels
The best location in Vilamoura for most visitors — close to restaurants, the beach, and boat trip departures.

Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort is the flagship property, positioned on the Victoria golf course. It has the best spa in Vilamoura, multiple pools, and several restaurants including a fine-dining option. From approximately €200–350 per night in shoulder season; higher in July and August. The service standard is consistently the highest in the resort. The golf course location means you’re a 10–15-minute walk from the marina rather than right on it.
Golf Resorts
Vilamoura’s five courses (Old Course/Vilamoura Classic, Victoria, Laguna, Pinhal, Millennium) are all within the resort footprint. Most major hotels can arrange tee times and shuttle service to any course. Green fees run approximately €60–140 depending on course and season as of 2026.
For golfers specifically, the hotel-golf package approach often provides better value than booking hotel and golf separately. Tivoli Marina and Anantara both offer golf packages. The off-season for golf (October through April) coincides with lower hotel rates — the best time for a golf-focused trip.
Apartments and Villas
Holiday apartments and privately let villas make up a large portion of Vilamoura’s accommodation supply — and often represent better value than the resort hotels, particularly for families or groups staying a week.
A two-bedroom apartment near the marina runs approximately €100–180 per night in shoulder season; in high summer, expect €160–280. A villa with pool in the Vilamoura residential area starts around €200 per night in shoulder season, rising significantly in July and August.
Advantages of apartments: more space, kitchen facilities, and access to the excellent fish market in adjacent Quarteira (a 10-minute walk or drive). Most apartments have pool access either privately or through a shared complex.
Quarteira as a Base
Quarteira immediately west of Vilamoura is worth considering as an alternative base. Accommodation runs 20–40% cheaper than equivalent Vilamoura options. The beach is the same sand, and the fish market on the Quarteira waterfront is one of the best in the central Algarve. The older resort infrastructure looks dated compared to Vilamoura’s polish, but the character is more genuinely Portuguese.
Several mid-range hotels in Quarteira cost €80–140 per night in summer — good value by Algarve resort standards.
Getting to Vilamoura
From Faro airport: 30 km west on the A22, approximately 25–30 minutes. Taxis cost approximately €35–55 as of 2026. Book airport transfers in advance for predictable pricing.
From Albufeira: 10 km east, 15 minutes by car. Taxis from Albufeira marina cost approximately €15–20.
From Lisbon: Approximately 290 km south, 3 hours by car on the A2/A22. Rede Expressos coaches serve Loulé (12 km north) and Albufeira from Lisbon.

Best Time to Book
October through May (golfers): Green fees are lower, hotel rates are 20–40% below peak, and temperatures are 18–24°C — ideal for golf. This is the core golf season; the resort atmosphere is calmer.
June and September (beach and marina): Warm enough for the beach and sea (water 21–24°C), quieter than July and August, and hotel availability is easier. September especially sees the marina at full animation while crowds are lower than peak.
July and August: The resort is at maximum. The marina is lively every evening, boat trips fill up, and hotel rates peak. Families with school-age children tend to concentrate here. Book 2–3 months ahead for the better properties.
Summary
Vilamoura suits specific types of traveller well: golfers who want course variety and easy logistics; couples who want a polished marina resort with good restaurants and sailing; and families who value the beach plus pool combination with resort amenities on hand. It is not the place for those seeking authentic Portuguese character or budget-friendly travel — the Algarve’s eastern towns (Tavira, Olhão) serve those priorities better. But for what it does, Vilamoura does it well.
