Getting to Sagres - From Lagos, Faro Airport & Lisbon

Sagres is at the end of the road in every sense — the southwestern tip of continental Europe, 30km beyond Lagos and well past the point where most Algarve visitors turn back. Getting there requires either a car or a deliberate bus journey. The reward is a destination that’s significantly less crowded than the central Algarve, even at peak summer.

From Lagos (the main gateway)

Lagos is the practical base for reaching Sagres without a car, and the starting point for most road journeys from the central Algarve. The two towns are 30km apart on the N268, a good two-lane road that passes through Vila do Bispo.

By bus: Eva Transportes operates the Lagos–Sagres route several times daily. Journey time is approximately 55–65 minutes depending on stops. Cost is approximately €4–6 per adult as of 2026. The bus departs from Lagos bus station (Rua das Portas de Portugal, near the train station). In summer, early morning and mid-afternoon services run more frequently; winter timetables are reduced. Check current timetables at the Eva Transportes website or at Lagos bus station on arrival — schedules change seasonally.

By car or rental: The N268 from Lagos to Sagres takes 30–35 minutes in normal traffic. The road is good quality, mostly flat and straight once clear of Lagos. Petrol stations are at Lagos, Vila do Bispo (15km before Sagres), and at Sagres itself. Hire car availability in Lagos is good — all major and local rental companies operate there. Expect to pay approximately €30–50 per day for a basic hire car in summer as of 2026. Book ahead for July and August when Algarve hire cars are in high demand.

By taxi or Uber: A direct taxi from Lagos to Sagres costs approximately €35–45 as of 2026. Uber operates in the area with reasonable wait times from Lagos. Surge pricing during airport transfer windows can push prices higher. A shared taxi or pre-booked transfer is sometimes cheaper for groups.

By bike: The route from Lagos to Sagres is 30km and mostly manageable on a road bike, though there’s a steady climb before Vila do Bispo. Several Lagos bike hire shops offer multi-day rentals from approximately €20–25 per day as of 2026. The Costa Vicentina cycling route passes through the area.

From Faro Airport

Faro is the main international gateway to the Algarve, with regular flights from the UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, and other European cities. Sagres is approximately 115km west of Faro.

By car from Faro airport: Take the N2 or IP1 north briefly, then the A22 (Via do Infante) motorway west to Lagos, then the N125/N268 west to Sagres. Total drive time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes in normal traffic. The A22 motorway has tolls — approximately €8–12 one way Faro to Lagos as of 2026 (electronic billing via rental car or hire a Via Verde transponder). Alternatively, take the toll-free N125 coast road, which adds 20–30 minutes through Albufeira, Portimão, and Lagos.

By private transfer: A private transfer from Faro airport directly to Sagres costs approximately €90–120 for up to 3 passengers as of 2026, rising to €130–160 for larger vehicles. Pre-book through a transfer company or your accommodation. Welcome Pickups and similar services operate the route.

By public transport from Faro: There is no direct public transport from Faro to Sagres. The practical option is train or bus to Lagos, then the Eva bus to Sagres. Faro to Lagos by train takes approximately 1 hour 10 minutes with a change at Tunes (approximately €8–12 as of 2026). Alternatively, Rede Expressos buses run Faro to Lagos. Lagos to Sagres then adds a further hour by bus. Total public transport journey from Faro airport to Sagres: approximately 2.5–3 hours minimum.

From Lisbon

Lisbon is 290km from Sagres — a long journey by any method, but manageable in a day.

By car from Lisbon: Take the A2 south from Lisbon to Grândola, then the A26 toward Setúbal or the IP1 south through Alentejo to the A22 junction, then west to Lagos and Sagres. Drive time is approximately 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes depending on traffic through Lisbon and route choice. The A2 and A22 both have tolls — budget approximately €15–20 each way for tolls.

By bus from Lisbon: Rede Expressos runs multiple daily coaches from Lisbon (Sete Rios terminal) to Lagos. Journey time is approximately 3.5–4 hours. Cost is approximately €22–28 as of 2026. From Lagos, connect to the Eva Transportes service to Sagres (1 hour, €4–6). The full door-to-door journey from Lisbon to Sagres by coach is approximately 5 hours.

By train from Lisbon: Trains run from Lisbon Oriente or Lisbon Entrecampos to Lagos via Tunes. Journey time is approximately 3.5–4 hours. Cost is approximately €25–35 as of 2026 depending on class and booking advance. From Lagos, connect to the Eva Transportes bus to Sagres. Book train tickets via CP (Comboios de Portugal) website.

By plane: Not applicable — Sagres is 30 minutes from the nearest airport (Faro), and there are no direct flights to Faro from most destinations that would be flying to Lisbon.

Getting Around Sagres

The village itself is small enough to walk across in 10 minutes. The main cluster of restaurants, the supermarket, and the bus stop are all near the central square (Praça da República). Mareta beach is a 10-minute walk south. Baleeira Harbour (for boat trips) is a 10-minute walk east.

For beaches and the cape: Tonel beach is 1km from the village — a short walk or 2-minute drive. Martinhal is 4km east. Praia de Beliche is 3km northwest toward the cape. Cape St. Vincent itself is 6km from the village. There’s no bus between these points. Uber operates in the area and response times from the village are typically 5–15 minutes. Pre-book drivers for early morning surf sessions.

Cycling: The headland is relatively flat and the distances are short. A hire bike (available from Sagres Natura and some accommodation providers) covers the village, fortress, and Tonel easily. For Beliche and the cape, you’ll face some wind exposure.
