Lagos is the most appealing base on the western Algarve. The old town is intact, the beaches are among the best in Portugal, and Ponta da Piedade — the headland of golden sea arches and caves just south of town — is genuinely extraordinary. It’s busy in July and August but manageable in June and September, and largely pleasant from October through May. See our Lagos city guide for transport and accommodation context.

Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is a 2km headland of layered sandstone and limestone cliffs, eroded into arches, sea stacks, and caves. The rock changes colour through the day — orange in morning light, gold at midday, copper at sunset.

Kayak tours (€35–45 for 2 hours) are the best way to see it. They access caves and grottos that are too small for motorised boats, particularly at high tide. Several operators run departures from the beach below the headland. Book a day ahead in summer.

Boat tours (€20, around 1 hour) cover the main arches and give good views of the cliffs. Faster and easier than kayaking. Boats depart from Lagos marina.

On foot: A trail runs along the cliff edge from the lighthouse at the end of the headland. Free. The views from above are different — wider — and worth combining with a boat or kayak trip for the full picture. Drive or cycle to the car park at the end of Ponta da Piedade; it’s 3km from the town centre on foot.

Beaches

Praia Dona Ana is a 10-minute walk from the old town — a relatively small beach enclosed by sandstone cliffs with sea caves at either end. It fills up by 10am in summer. Arrive early or accept the crowds.

Praia do Camilo is slightly further south — 107 steps down a wooden boardwalk to a narrow beach with impressive rock formations. Popular; also fills quickly. Worth the steps.

Meia Praia stretches 3km east of Lagos across the estuary. Less dramatic scenery but more space, better for swimming, and less crowded. The water here is warmer than the ocean-facing beaches. Accessible by water taxi from the marina (€2) or by car.

Old Town

Lagos’s old town is bounded by 16th-century walls, much of it original. The main square — Praça Gil Eanes — has a slightly eccentric bronze of Dom Sebastião, the young king who disappeared at the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578.

The Mercado de Escravos (Praça do Infante) marks the site of Europe’s first transatlantic slave market, established in 1441. A small museum documents the history with primary sources. Admission around €3–5. Not large, but important context for understanding the era of Portuguese exploration.

Water Activities

Beyond kayaking, the Lagos area offers:

  • Coasteering — swimming, jumping, and climbing along the base of the cliffs. Multiple operators; €40–60 for 2–3 hours.
  • Stand-up paddleboarding — flat water rentals at Meia Praia; €15–20/hour.
  • Surfing lessons — offered at various Lagos beaches. Conditions vary. Sagres is 30km west and has more consistent surf, particularly at Praia do Tonel and Praia do Beliche.

Day Trips

Sagres (30km west, €3.50 by bus, 40 minutes) has the dramatic Fortaleza de Sagres, the southwest corner of continental Europe, and the consistent surf of Praia do Tonel. Wilder than Lagos, with less tourist infrastructure.

Aljezur and Arrifana (1 hour north by car) are on the Costa Vicentina — a protected coastline with uncrowded beaches and fewer facilities than the eastern Algarve. Praia de Arrifana is a surf beach in a sheltered cove. Best with your own transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best beach near Lagos?
It depends on what you want. Praia Dona Ana is the most photogenic — framed by caves and sandstone cliffs. Meia Praia is the longest and best for swimming. Praia do Camilo requires 107 steps but is well worth it.
How do you visit the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade?

What is the Mercado de Escravos in Lagos?
The site of Europe's first slave market, established in 1441 when Portuguese explorers began trading enslaved Africans. The building now houses a small museum documenting this history.
