Quinta da Regaleira Tickets: €12 Entry, Opening Hours & Booking Tips

The Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira is one of the most photographed spots in all of Portugal - a spiral staircase descending 27 metres into the earth through nine levels of stone, lit by light filtering down from a circular opening above. The estate surrounding it is just as extraordinary: a Neo-Gothic palace, underground grottos, garden towers, and tunnels that emerge at unexpected points across the grounds. This is what Sintra looks like when it’s not trying to be a conventional palace.

Entry Fees (as of 2026)

• Youth (6–17) and seniors (65+): approximately €7.50

Ticket prices are set by the Fundação Cultursintra and may adjust seasonally. Book online via Tiqets or the official Sintra tickets portal - in-person queues in summer peak (July–August) can run 30–40 minutes at the gate, and timed entry helps with congestion at the Initiation Well.

Opening Hours

Quinta da Regaleira is open daily. Hours vary by season:

• Summer (April–October): 9:30am to 8:00pm (last entry 7:00pm)
• Winter (November–March): 9:30am to 6:00pm (last entry 5:00pm)
• Closed: 25 December and 1 January

Allow at least two hours on site - the estate is larger than it looks on a map, and the underground tunnel network alone takes 30–40 minutes to explore properly.

The Initiation Well

The well (Poço Iniciático) is the centrepiece of the estate and the reason most visitors come. It descends nine levels via a spiral stone staircase, the levels separated by landings with stone benches. At the base is a compass rose inlaid in the floor - the Templar cross motif that recurs across the estate.

The well was never used for water. It was designed for ceremonial purposes, with strong references to Freemasonry and the Knights Templar. The nine levels correspond to the nine circles of Dante’s Inferno. At the bottom, a series of underground tunnels leads to various exits across the estate - some emerging through grotto mouths, others behind waterfalls.

Photography: The best angle is from the top, looking straight down through the spiral. Arrive early to get this shot without other visitors in frame. The well’s opening is narrow and the interior dark - a wide-angle lens or portrait mode on a phone works better than zoom.

The Palace Interior

The palace was completed in 1910 for António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a Brazilian coffee millionaire who bought the estate in 1892 and commissioned architect Luigi Manini to redesign it entirely. The result is an architectural pastiche - Neo-Manueline windows, Neo-Gothic towers, and Neo-Renaissance elements - that manages to feel coherent rather than chaotic.

The interior rooms open for guided and self-guided tours include the chapel (with carved stone altarpiece), the library, and the dining and reception rooms. Each floor is decorated with Carvalho Monteiro’s Masonic symbolism - serpents, owls, bats, and the cross of the Order of Christ appear repeatedly in the stonework and tilework.

Garden Grottos and Tunnels

The grounds extend across a hillside and include:

• The Waterfall Grotto: a cave mouth beside an artificial waterfall where one of the underground tunnel exits opens
• The Regaleira Tower: a tall Gothic tower at the edge of the formal garden, climbable for views over the estate
• The Chapel Grotto: a cave-shrine set into the slope beneath the palace
• Lago Imunda (Lake of the Initiation): a still lake beside the lower gardens, ringed by carved stone benches

The tunnel network connecting these points is mostly walkable without ducking, though some passages are low and narrow. It is not suitable for visitors with mobility difficulties or severe claustrophobia.

Best Photography Spots

1. Top of the Initiation Well - the spiral looking down; best in morning light when it’s less crowded
2. The palace facade from the lower formal garden - the full Neo-Manueline frontage reflected in the lawn
3. The Waterfall Grotto exit - mossy stone arch with water running beside it; works at any time of day
4. Regaleira Tower terrace - overlooks the entire estate and the forested Serra de Sintra beyond

How to Get There from Sintra Town Centre

Quinta da Regaleira is a 10-minute walk west from Sintra train station along Rua Barbosa du Bocage. It’s signposted from the town centre. Unlike Pena Palace, there’s no bus required - you walk directly from the station through Sintra’s old town streets.

By taxi from Sintra station: approximately €5–7, barely worth it for such a short distance.

Driving: limited street parking nearby. Sintra’s road system in the old town is congested in summer. Train + walk is easier.

Combining Quinta da Regaleira with Pena Palace

Both are doable in a single day if you start early. A suggested order:

1. 9:30am - Quinta da Regaleira opens. Arrive at the gate, explore the palace and grounds for 2–2.5 hours. The Initiation Well is best before 11am when coach parties arrive.
2. 12:00pm - Walk or take Bus 434 up to Pena Palace. Book a timed entry slot for 12:30–1:00pm. The palace interior takes about 45 minutes.
3. 2:00pm - Explore the Pena Park on the Palace-only ticket or walk back through the lower park.
4. Late afternoon - Sintra town. Return to the village for lunch (most restaurants are good from around 12:30pm, though they fill fast) or pastries from one of the bakeries near the train station.

This itinerary requires booking tickets for both sites online in advance. In July and August, timed entry slots for both often sell out 2–3 days ahead.

Booking Tips

• Book online before you travel, especially for summer visits. Book Sintra tours and tickets
• The Sintra Heritage Pass covers multiple sites (Pena, Moorish Castle, Monserrate, Sintra National Palace) and can be better value if you plan to visit three or more.
• Quinta da Regaleira does not offer the same rigid timed-entry system as Pena Palace - but online booking still skips the gate queue.
• The estate can be surprisingly cold in the tunnels even on hot days. Bring a light layer.

Quinta da Regaleira is unlike any other site in Sintra. Where Pena Palace is about spectacle and royal history, Regaleira is about mystery - the kind of place where the more you look, the more you find. Budget a full morning for it.
