São Miguel is large enough that each corner of the island merits its own day. Most day trips spread out from Ponta Delgada along the EN1-1A east–west highway, with detours into the volcanic highlands. A rental car (approximately €40–60 per day as of 2026) unlocks all routes, but organised tours from Ponta Delgada cover the main sites if you prefer not to drive.

Sete Cidades

Distance from Ponta Delgada: 30km west, around 40 minutes.

The twin crater lakes of Sete Cidades — one blue, one green — sit inside a caldera 5km wide. The colour difference comes from the angle of light and slight variation in algae; from the rim they look strikingly different, at water level they look almost the same.

Vista do Rei viewpoint is the essential stop. The miradouro sits on the caldera rim at roughly 880m elevation and looks straight down into both lakes and the village below. The car park is free, and there is a small café and gift shop. Arrive before 10am in summer to beat the tour coaches. Admission: free.

Driving into the caldera takes another 15 minutes on a winding descent. The village of Sete Cidades at the bottom has a café and the launch points for kayak rental (approximately €30 for 2 hours). Paddling from the blue lake through the connecting channel to the green lake takes around 40 minutes at a relaxed pace.

Rim circuit hike: an 8km loop on marked trails with continuous views into the caldera. Takes 2.5–3 hours. No technical skill needed but the path can be muddy and slippery after rain — wear shoes with grip.

Furnas

Distance from Ponta Delgada: 45km east, around 50 minutes.

Furnas is São Miguel’s geothermal heartland — the valley floor sits above a volcanic hotspot and vents steam and sulphur gases at the surface. The thermal pools here are the island’s most popular attractions.

Caldeiras das Furnas (free, open 24 hours): a boardwalk path through the fumarole field on the edge of Lagoa das Furnas. Boiling mud pools, steaming vents, and the distinctive sulphur smell. The lake itself is visible from the path. Budget 30–45 minutes.

Cozido das Furnas at Restaurante Tony: the restaurant buries clay pots of meat and vegetables in the geothermal ground at 7am; they are pulled out and served at 1pm. The pot contains pork belly, blood sausage, chouriço, chicken, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots — one of the most memorable meals on São Miguel. Arrive by 12:30 as it fills completely and no reservations are taken. Price: approximately €18–22 per person as of 2026. Lunch service only.

Poça da Dona Beija thermal pools: outdoor pools fed by geothermal springs, water temperature 38–40°C. Open until midnight; entry approximately €8 as of 2026. Swimwear and flip-flops required. Busy after 7pm.

Caldeira Velha

Distance from Ponta Delgada: 35km northeast, around 40 minutes.

A smaller, quieter thermal site than Furnas, set in a fern-covered forest with a waterfall and a warm pool fed by hot spring water. The water temperature in the pools is around 28–30°C — warm enough to sit in comfortably. Entry: €4 as of 2026. The site is managed by the regional government and has changing facilities and showers. Best visited on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds.

Nordeste Viewpoints

Distance from Ponta Delgada: 80km east, around 1.5 hours each way.

The northeastern tip of São Miguel is the quietest and least visited part of the island — dramatic coastal cliffs, no tourists, and a series of miradouros strung along the headland. The Miradouro da Ponta do Sossego looks east over the open Atlantic from a garden terrace; the Miradouro da Ponta da Madrugada gives the most exposed views. The village of Nordeste itself has a small café and a 19th-century church.

This route works best combined with a stop at the Gorreana Tea Plantation on the north coast (free entry, open daily). Europe’s last surviving commercial tea operation since 1883; the terraced gardens are open to walk and the café sells the plantation’s own green and black teas.

Allow a full day: drive east via the south coast, loop around Nordeste, stop at Gorreana on the north coast, and return to Ponta Delgada via the EN1-1A.

Getting Around

Rental car: the most practical option for all these day trips. Book in advance at the Ponta Delgada airport — rates start around €40–60 per day as of 2026. Roads are generally good, though mountain sections above the calderas can be narrow and foggy.

Organised tours: full-day guided tours from Ponta Delgada cover Sete Cidades + Furnas in one day (from approximately €50 per person as of 2026) and include hotel pick-up. Useful if you want local commentary or prefer not to navigate independently.
