Faro Airport (FAO) is the gateway to the Algarve, handling over 10 million passengers per year in peak season. Unlike Lisbon and Porto, Faro has no metro connection - taxi, private transfer, shuttle, or the local bus are the main options into the region.
Bus - Cheapest Route Into Faro City
Proximo Line 14 and 16 run from the airport bus stop (outside the terminal) to Faro city centre bus station.
- Cost: approximately β¬2.35 as of 2026
- Journey time: 10β15 minutes to Faro centre
- Frequency: roughly every 30 minutes during daylight hours; reduced service evenings and Sundays
- Onwards from Faro: Eva Transportes coaches link Faro bus station to Albufeira (1 hour), PortimΓ£o (1h30), Lagos (2 hours), Tavira (45 minutes), and other destinations. A through journey to Albufeira costs approximately β¬6β8.
Best for: Solo travellers staying in Faro itself or those comfortable with the onward coach connection.
Taxi From Faro Airport
Metered taxis are available from the rank directly outside Arrivals.
| Destination | Approximate Cost (2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Faro city centre | β¬12β16 | 10β15 min |
| Vilamoura | β¬30β40 | 25β30 min |
| Albufeira | β¬55β70 | 35β40 min |
| PortimΓ£o | β¬70β85 | 50 min |
| Lagos | β¬85β105 | 60β70 min |
| Tavira | β¬28β38 | 25 min |
| Sagres | β¬120β145 | 80 min |
Night rates (21:00β06:00) and weekend surcharges add approximately 20%. Luggage fee is β¬1.60 per bag in the boot. August queues at the taxi rank can be 15β25 minutes - the rank is one of the few pressure points at Faro Airport.
Uber & Rideshare
Uber and Bolt operate at Faro Airport but are less reliable here than in Lisbon or Porto. Driver availability is inconsistent, particularly late at night and during peak-season surges. Pick-up is from a designated zone outside Arrivals.
- Cost to Albufeira: approximately β¬45β65 (often close to taxi rates, sometimes higher with surge)
- Cost to Vilamoura: approximately β¬25β35
- Recommendation: if you are travelling to a resort more than 30km away, a pre-booked private transfer is usually more reliable and can be similarly priced
Shared Shuttle Transfers
Shared shuttles are widely used for Faro Airport due to the resort distances. You share with other passengers and are dropped off in sequence.
- Cost: approximately β¬10β18 per person to Albufeira, β¬15β22 per person to Lagos as of 2026
- Journey time: 60β90 minutes to Albufeira (multiple drops), 90β120 minutes to Lagos
- Booking: pre-book online; shuttle companies include Yellow Fish, Blacklane Shuttle, and various local operators
- Best for: solo travellers, couples, and anyone on a budget who doesnβt mind the time
Not suitable for large groups with lots of luggage or anyone with early check-in deadlines.
Private Airport Transfers - Best For Resort Destinations
For most resort visitors - particularly families and groups - a pre-booked private transfer is the most practical option from Faro Airport.
- Cost to Albufeira: approximately β¬50β65 for up to 4 passengers as of 2026
- Cost to Lagos: approximately β¬80β100 for up to 4 passengers
- Cost to Vilamoura: approximately β¬35β50 for up to 4 passengers
- Larger minibuses (5β8 passengers): available for β¬70β120 depending on destination
- Booking: Compare Faro Airport transfer prices
- Welcome Pickups covers the Algarve from Faro Airport - fixed pricing to resorts including Albufeira and Lagos, with English-speaking local drivers. Book a Welcome Pickups transfer from Faro Airport
- Includes: Fixed price, name sign in arrivals, direct to your villa or hotel, no meter
For groups of 3 or more travelling to Albufeira or beyond, a private transfer is usually within β¬10β20 of the taxi price but offers door-to-door service with no uncertainty.
Car Hire at Faro Airport
Faro is Portugalβs best airport for car hire - all major rental companies have desks in the Arrivals hall (no depot run required).
- Cost: from approximately β¬18β25/day in low season; from β¬45β80/day in August as of 2026
- Note: August walk-ups regularly find no compact cars available - book 3β4 weeks ahead for summer travel
- Via Verde tolls: essential for Algarve driving; opt in when collecting the car
A car makes the western Algarve - Sagres, Carrapateira, Bordeira, and the Wild Alentejo coast - far more accessible. If you plan to explore beyond your resort, car hire at the airport is the most efficient approach. Once youβve arrived, our Algarve getting-around guide covers EVA buses, the Algarve train line, and local transport between towns.
