Cascais is a coastal town 30km west of Lisbon on the Estoril Coast — once a fishing village, then a royal summer resort, now a prosperous commuter town with an active marina, several beaches, and a well-preserved historic centre. It makes an excellent half-day or full-day trip from Lisbon and combines well with Sintra on the same day. For transport and accommodation see our Cascais city guide.
Getting to Cascais
Train: Lisbon Cais do Sodré → Cascais, 40 minutes, €2.35. Runs every 20 minutes. The train follows the Tagus estuary and then the coast — one of the prettiest urban commuter routes in Europe.
Beaches
Three beaches within 10 minutes’ walk of Cascais station:
Praia de Cascais: Town beach. Small, sheltered, sand. Can get crowded in summer. Safe for swimming.
Praia da Rainha: 5 minutes from the station. Similar to Praia de Cascais, slightly more sheltered.
Praia do Guincho: 8km west of Cascais (bus or taxi required). Wild Atlantic beach with constant northwest winds — excellent for windsurfing and kitesurfing, good for experienced surfers, but dangerous swimming (strong currents, unpredictable waves). Backed by natural dunes, no development except one restaurant. The 400 bus from Cascais runs occasionally; otherwise take a taxi (~€10) or cycle.
Boca do Inferno
“Mouth of Hell” — a sea arch and blowhole in the limestone cliffs 2km west of town. Impressive during winter Atlantic swells; in summer the sea is usually calm and the spray effect is minimal. Free to visit, 30-minute walk along the coast from town or 5 minutes by car (paid parking nearby).
Cascais Old Town (Centro Histórico)
Compact and pleasant: Praça 5 de Outubro (main pedestrian square), the 17th-century Citadel (now a hotel), Nossa Senhora da Assunção church, and a covered daily market (Mercado da Vila). The 500-metre pedestrian zone has cafés, restaurants, and traditional shops.
Museu dos Condes de Castro Guimarães: 1900 neo-Manueline villa with art collection and gardens on the seafront. Tickets €3.
Cabo da Roca
12km northwest of Cascais on Bus 403 to Sintra: the westernmost point of continental Europe (38°47’N, 9°30’W). A lighthouse, cliffs, and a certificate you can buy in the visitor centre proving you were there. 30-minute stop is enough.
Marina and Restaurants
The Marina de Cascais has dozens of restaurants. For seafood: John Bull (English-owned but reliable fish), Restaurante Dom Carlos (riverside, grilled fish). For Portuguese food closer to the train station: Solar do Guarda-Mor (traditional, moderate prices).
