São João Festival Porto 2026

São João is Porto’s patron saint festival and by some margin the city’s largest annual event. On the night of 23 June, the entire city takes to the streets for an all-night celebration that runs until sunrise on the 24th. This is not a staged performance for tourists - it is a genuine neighbourhood street party that has been part of Porto’s identity for centuries, and most of the city’s population participates.

The Traditions

Three traditions define São João in Porto. The first is the plastic hammer: vendors sell squeaky rubber hammers from street carts throughout the day and night, and hitting strangers on the head with them is considered good luck and entirely expected. Accept it in the spirit it is intended. The second is the alho-porro (leek or garlic plant), which people wave in each other’s faces; the pungent smell is said to ward off evil spirits. The third is the flying of hot air balloons (balões de S. João) from rooftops and open areas after midnight. Thousands go up across the city simultaneously, creating a spectacular spectacle from any high vantage point.

Grilled sardines are served from pop-up stalls and from neighbours’ balconies across every neighbourhood. The smell of charcoal and sardines fills the entire city from around 21:00. A serving typically costs €5 to €8 with bread. Fireworks launch from the Arrábida Bridge over the Douro River at midnight.

Where to Be

The Ribeira waterfront and the hillside streets of Bonfim and Campanhã are among the most densely celebrated areas. The Ponte Dom Luís I bridge and the neighbouring hillside of Gaia provide elevated views across the fireworks. The Praça da República and the streets around Bonfim’s neighbourhood associations (coletividades) are less tourist-focused and give a more local experience.

Avenida dos Aliados hosts an official stage programme with live music from around 21:00 and is the main gathering point for those arriving without a local connection to a neighbourhood party.

Practical Tips

23 June is a public holiday in Porto. Public transport runs late into the night - check Andante timetables for the extended São João schedules. Metro services continue until around 01:00 and special late buses cover some routes; check STCP for the current timetable.

Do not plan to drive. Parking in the centre is impossible and the streets are closed to traffic from early evening. Book accommodation well in advance; Porto hotels sell out for this weekend in March or April.
