Funchal’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display has held a Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks show by number of fireworks launched from a single location. The display takes place above the city’s amphitheatre of hills, with rockets launched simultaneously from dozens of points across the hillsides surrounding the bay. The result is visible for miles in every direction and lasts around eight minutes.

The Event

The display begins at midnight on 31 December and is entirely free to watch. Viewing points spread across central Funchal and the seafront promenade. The Avenida do Mar along the waterfront gives a wide panoramic view. The hillside neighbourhoods of Monte and Babosas sit above much of the smoke and offer elevated sightlines, though reaching them after midnight requires a taxi. Hotels along the Lido strip also face the bay and many run private rooftop events.

The evening before the fireworks includes live music along the Avenida do Mar and in the Praça do Município, typically starting around 21:00 and running until after the midnight display. Past years have included orchestral concerts, DJs, and pop acts; the 2026 programme will be announced by Visit Madeira in autumn 2026.

Why People Come Specifically for This

Madeira in December is mild by northern European standards, with daytime temperatures around 18 to 20°C. This combination of a record-scale fireworks display and a reliably warm winter setting draws significant numbers of visitors from the UK, Germany, and Scandinavia each year. Booking accommodation in Funchal for the New Year period more than three months in advance is strongly recommended; the city fills completely, and prices reflect the demand.

Practical Tips

The best free viewing spots along Avenida do Mar fill by 22:00. If you want a waterfront position, arrive no later than 21:30. Alternatively, many of Funchal’s hillside miradouros (viewpoints) - including the Pico dos Barcelos and Miradouro das Neves - offer less crowded views above the bay.

Taxis and rideshare services become extremely difficult to find after midnight. If your hotel is not within walking distance of the centre, agree a pickup time and location with a driver in advance, or plan to walk. The cable car from Monte does not run on New Year’s Eve.

Funchal’s restaurants are fully booked for New Year’s Eve dinners by October in most years. Hotel gala dinners are the most practical option for late arrivals planning; these range from approximately €90 to €250 per person as of recent years.

Our Madeira island guide covers Funchal’s layout, transport, and accommodation options across different budget ranges.
