Madeira Flower Festival 2026

Madeira’s Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) is the island’s most photographed annual event, held each spring when the island’s subtropical gardens reach peak colour. The festival transforms central Funchal for a long weekend, typically in late April or early May, with a parade, street exhibitions, and the famous flower carpet laid in front of the Sé Cathedral.

What the Festival Involves

The centrepiece is the Flower Parade, which moves through the main avenues of Funchal over a Saturday afternoon. Floats are constructed entirely from fresh flowers - birds of paradise, anthuriums, orchids, and hydrangeas - by local groups who compete for the best display. The route runs from the Avenida Arriaga area through the seafront and typically lasts two to three hours. Viewing is free from the roadside.

The flower carpet appears in the Largo da Sé square in front of the cathedral. Volunteers, many of them schoolchildren, lay individual blooms by hand to form a mosaic design that changes each year. The carpet is usually completed by the Saturday morning and remains in place through the weekend. It is one of the most photographed spots in Funchal during the festival period; arrive early in the morning to see it without crowds.

Secondary exhibitions fill the city’s parks and promenades throughout the week surrounding the main parade. The Jardim de Santa Luzia and Parque de Santa Catarina typically host floral art installations and live music.

Practical Information

The exact 2026 dates will be confirmed by Visit Madeira in late 2025. The festival usually falls in the last weekend of April or the first of May. Hotels in Funchal book out quickly once dates are announced; confirm your stay as soon as the programme is published.

Flights to Madeira’s Funchal airport connect from Lisbon, Porto, and multiple UK and mainland European airports. The airport is around 20 minutes from central Funchal by taxi (approximately €20 as of 2026; verify current fares on arrival). There is no shuttle bus directly into the centre.

Entry to street events and the parade route is free. Some evening concerts or gala events at the Casino Madeira may require tickets; check the official Visit Madeira programme for specifics.

Tips for Visitors

The parade route gets packed. Arriving at least 90 minutes before the start and claiming a spot near Avenida Arriaga gives the clearest view. If you have children, the raised terracing around the Jardim Municipal offers sightlines above the crowd.
