Things to Do in Porto Santo: Beach, Wine Therapy & Island Walks

Porto Santo is a quiet island 43km northeast of Madeira, part of the same archipelago but entirely different in character. Where Madeira is green, lush, and mountainous, Porto Santo is drier, browner, and low-lying - and has one thing Madeira entirely lacks: a 9km stretch of fine golden sand that runs almost the entire length of the south coast. The island has around 5,000 permanent residents and becomes noticeably busier in July and August when both mainland Portuguese tourists and Madeiran day-trippers cross over for the beach.

The 9km Beach

Praia de Porto Santo is the island’s defining feature and the main reason most people visit. The beach runs from Vila Baleira (the island’s only town) east to Ponta da Calheta without interruption - a rare thing in the Madeira archipelago. The water is clean and calm by Atlantic standards, with gentle waves most of the year. The sand is fine and slightly golden-coloured, and local tradition holds that it has mild anti-inflammatory and skin-beneficial properties due to its mineral content (silicates and traces of radioactive minerals). Whether or not the claims hold scientific weight, it is unquestionably one of the best beaches in Portugal.

Beach facilities along the strip include sunbed and umbrella rentals (approximately €8–12 for a pair as of 2026), beach bars and restaurants, and shower facilities. The western end near Vila Baleira is busiest; walk 2–3km east for quieter sections.

Best section for swimming: the central beach near the Hotel Porto Santo (sheltered and gently sloping) and the eastern end near Ponta da Calheta (calmer water, fewer crowds).

Wine Therapy at VinoSpa

Casa de Colombo - Columbus Museum

Vila Baleira’s main cultural attraction is the Casa de Colombo, a 15th-century building that tradition holds as the home of Christopher Columbus during his years on Porto Santo (approximately 1479–1482, when he was married to Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, daughter of the island’s first governor). The museum now holds:

• Navigation maps and instruments from the Age of Discovery
• Documents and paintings related to Columbus’s life and Portuguese Atlantic exploration
• Island history: the settlement of Porto Santo as one of the first European Atlantic colonies (from the 1420s)

The Casa de Colombo is a short walk from the ferry terminal in the centre of Vila Baleira.

Watersports

Porto Santo’s beach and surrounding waters are well set up for water activities:

• Surfing and bodyboarding: the western end of the beach near Ponta da Calheta and the north coast at Praia do Zimbralinho pick up the most swell; board rental available in Vila Baleira from approximately €15/half day
• Kite surfing: Porto Santo gets consistent trade winds, particularly in summer; the eastern beach sections near Serra de Fora are favoured
• Diving and snorkelling: Porto Santo has underwater caves, rocky reefs, and a wreck (the Madeirense cargo ship, at around 18m depth) off the coast. Dive operators in Vila Baleira offer guided dives from approximately €40–50 per dive as of 2026; PADI courses available
• Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding: equipment available from beach operators along the main beach

Walking and Hiking

Porto Santo’s landscape may lack Madeira’s dramatic levadas and vertical cliffs, but the island has enjoyable walking on well-marked trails:

• Pico do Castelo (437m): the highest accessible peak, with a ruined 16th-century fortress and panoramic views of the whole island. Trail from Vila Baleira is approximately 3–4 hours return; drive to within 30 minutes of the summit if preferred
• Portela viewpoint: easily reached by car or on foot from Vila Baleira (20 minutes); overlooks the beach and the south coast
• Pico Branco trail: a marked circular route along the eastern volcanic ridge; 2–3 hours
• Calheta to Ponta da Calheta coastal walk: flat easy walk along the eastern beach; 30–45 minutes one way

Getting Around Porto Santo

The island is only 11km long and 6km wide. Options:

• Bicycle or quad bike: the most popular way to explore; rental available in Vila Baleira from approximately €10–20/day for a bike, €60–80/day for a quad as of 2026
• Taxi: a handful of taxis operate on the island; short trips are €5–10
• Car hire: available from operators in Vila Baleira; from approximately €35–55/day
• On foot: the beach and Vila Baleira are entirely walkable; out-of-town trails require a bike or vehicle
