Where to Stay in Évora: Best Areas and Hotels Guide

Évora rewards an overnight stay far more than a day trip. Once the last coach leaves after 6pm, the walled city empties and becomes a different place — lantern-lit lanes, the Roman Temple glowing against a dark blue sky, and almost no one else around. The Alentejo countryside starts just outside the walls, and the wine is reason enough to linger.

Accommodation in Évora divides into three zones: the historic centre inside the Roman walls, the quieter streets near the aqueduct, and rural quintas in the surrounding Alentejo farmland. This guide covers all three.

Historic Centre (Inside the Roman Walls)

The compact walled city holds most of the major sights within a 10-minute walk of each other. This is where you’ll find the densest concentration of restaurants, wine bars, and hotels at every price point. The lanes are narrow — no car is needed once you’re checked in.

Recommended hotels:

  • Pousada de Évora (Convento dos Lóios) — the most atmospheric place to stay in Évora, a 15th-century convent converted into a Pousada directly opposite the Roman Temple. Gothic cloisters, a vaulted breakfast room, and a small pool. From approximately €180–300 per night as of 2026.
  • M’AR De AR Muralhas — contemporary boutique hotel inside a group of historic townhouses near the Cathedral, with pool and spa. One of the best mid-luxury options in the city centre. From approximately €120–190 per night.
  • Albergaria Calvário — well-regarded mid-range guesthouse in a converted 16th-century building, quiet courtyard, rooftop terrace with views over the walls. From approximately €75–120 per night.
  • Hotel Santa Clara — reliable three-star near the Praça do Giraldo, clean and well-located. Popular with independent travellers. From approximately €60–95 per night.
  • Évora Olive Hotel — modern budget option close to the Praça do Giraldo, straightforward rooms, good value for the location. From approximately €50–80 per night.
  • Casa dos Teles Hostel — well-reviewed hostel in the centre. Dorm beds from approximately €20–35 per night; private rooms available from €55.

Pros: Maximum walking access to sights. Best selection of restaurants and wine bars. The Praça do Giraldo is lively in the evenings.

Cons: Some streets are cobbled and steep. Parking is extremely limited inside the walls — check with your hotel before arriving by car.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, anyone without a car, those who want to maximise evening atmosphere.

Near the Aqueduct (Silver of Prata Quarter)

The Aqueduct of Silver Water (Aqueduto da Prata) enters the city from the north, and the streets around it are quieter and more residential than the historic centre. This area suits travellers who want a calmer base with an easy walk to the sights.

Recommended hotels:

  • M’AR De AR Aqueduto — the group’s flagship Évora property, a spa hotel built around the aqueduct arches with an impressive pool, wine bar, and contemporary rooms. Probably the most design-forward hotel in the city. From approximately €130–210 per night.
  • Casa de São Tiago — boutique guesthouse near the aqueduct entrance with individually styled rooms and a leafy garden. From approximately €80–120 per night.
  • Pensão Policarpo — long-running family guesthouse near the aqueduct, basic but clean and friendly. One of the most affordable options in the city. From approximately €45–70 per night.

Pros: Quieter than the walled centre. Good access to the aqueduct and northern city walls. Slightly lower prices.

Cons: 10–15 minute walk to the Roman Temple and Cathedral. Fewer restaurant options within immediate walking distance.

Best for: Repeat visitors, budget travellers, those who prefer quieter surroundings.

Alentejo Quintas (Rural Stays)

The cork oak forests and vineyards around Évora are dotted with converted farmhouses and estates offering a distinctly Alentejo experience. These suit travellers with a hire car who want space, pool, and silence rather than urban convenience.

Recommended properties:

  • Convento do Espinheiro (Historic Hotel & Spa) — a 15th-century Augustinian monastery 3km north of Évora, converted into a five-star hotel with 92 rooms, a swimming pool, large spa, and Michelin-recommended restaurant. The most impressive property in the Évora area. From approximately €200–350 per night as of 2026.
  • Herdade dos Grous — wine estate with hotel rooms 70km south of Évora near Beja. Restaurant serves produce from the farm. From approximately €130–200 per night. Better as a multi-night wine country stay than a city base.
  • Monte da Ravasqueira — estate north of Évora with guestrooms, winery tours, and a restaurant. From approximately €100–160 per night.

Pros: Space, pools, silence, and direct access to Alentejo wine. Vastly different experience from city hotels.

Cons: A hire car is essential. Not practical for a single-night city visit.

Best for: Couples celebrating a milestone, wine enthusiasts, those making Évora part of a longer Alentejo road trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Évora worth staying overnight?
Yes. Most visitors come on a day trip from Lisbon, but an overnight stay lets you see the Roman Temple at dusk and the Chapel of Bones first thing in the morning before the coach groups arrive. The city slows down beautifully in the evening, and Alentejo wine is best appreciated at a table rather than on a schedule.
Where is the best area to stay in Évora?
The historic centre inside the Roman walls is the most convenient base — the Roman Temple, Cathedral, Chapel of Bones, and nearly all restaurants are within a 10-minute walk. The area around the aqueduct is quieter and slightly cheaper.
How do I get from Lisbon to Évora?
Direct trains run from Lisbon Oriente approximately every 1–2 hours. Journey time is around 1 hour 30 minutes. Tickets cost approximately €13–15 single as of 2026. Évora station is a 15-minute walk or short taxi from the walled centre.
Are there luxury hotels in Évora?
Yes. The Convento do Espinheiro, a converted 15th-century monastery 3km from the city, is the flagship luxury property. The Pousada de Évora (Lóios Convent) sits directly beside the Roman Temple within the walls. Both offer pools and historic architecture at approximately €180–350 per night.
